i bought a msi r9 290x gaming yesterday.
my room temps is around 28 degrees and my casing has decent airflow.
i am running it @ default GAMING MODE (1030mhz clock)
i ran some benchmarks such as metro last light,Crysis 3, Sleeping dogs,Tomb raider, Batman Arkham city, Hitman absolution , Uniengine Valley and Firestrike.

now the temps i got in benchmarks were ranging from 77 degrees to 87 degrees which imo is normal.
i played arkham origins for 30-40 mins and noted the temps which reached a maximum of 81 degree. however after 30 mins of tomb raider the temps went and stayed @ 92 degrees. In sleeping dogs i got temperatures around 86-88.
the last gpu i used before this was a HD7970dcuii which in this heat went all the way up to 75-76 degrees (43% fan speed)
the msi however goes up till 85% on fanspeeds at 85 degree+

so my question is am i safe? should i be alarmed or is this normal?
i am using a haf 922 case.
with a 280mm fan on side panel that acts as a exhaust.
using CM seidon with 2x 120mm fans that act as intake (at top of the case)
a xigmatek 120mm fan at the back that acts as exhaust and a 180mm fan at front of the haf 922 that acts as a intake as well as cools the hds.
a friend suggested that i change the flow of the fans with making the sidepanel 280mm a intake rather than a exhaust and using seidon fans as a exhaust rather than a intake.

the gpu comes with 1 year replace warranty so i am kind of worried about it in the long haul (this is my 1st msi product)

using Maximus VI hero and a i7 4770k.

Your friend told you right thing. Try to change airflow direction to intake and look for temps, 92 for an aftermarket cooler is not so good. I think if your temps stay below 85C while heavy, that's good.

i changed the fan flow and it worked..now the gpu stays at around 78degrees during gaming. and after 30 mins of farcry the tem never passed the 75 mark, I didnt test Tomb raider but Uniengine valley bench took the temps to 82 degrees and firestrike took them up to 75 degrees..so i guess the tweaking of the fans worked :)
