Im looking to spend $150 on a monitor and im stuck between http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168.... If anyone has either please give input. I will be primarily gaming but ill also be watching movies/youtube.

More about : choosing ips monitors

I would go acer for purely aesthetic reasons and for possible eyefinity or surround in the future (since thin bezel helps in that remark If you decide to get 2 more). Additionally, both monitors are identical in specs all the way down to response time.

So the bezel is better/smaller on the acer? I also heard that at this price point the ips doesnt make a big difference i guess because its cheaper ips, is there any truth to that? Is it still a big difference over tn?

It depends. I have never heard of cheap ips and all the screens seems to output same color and refresh rates as long as panels are the same. The bezel on acer screen is better and smaller bezel translate to better immersion. Compared to ips, TN panels can't match color reproduction but gamers will usually take the trade off for high refresh rates, faster response times, and cheaper in general. I would not spend that much money on a screen on less you make money on some art related computer software like cs6 or 3ds Maya. For gaming, you want higher resolution/refresh rates and high gtg response time.

Yeah these would be cheaper IPS panels, but they still look good. I wouldn't worry about it. I have one of the cheaper ASUS IPS monitors (probably 6-bit) and it still looks better than TN panels. However, I still use a TN panel for gaming, and the IPS is for movies/browsing.

Cheap IPS panels are usually 6-bit, better ones are 8-bit, and the best are 10-bit. High quality IPS panels are expensive.

So do you think I would be happy with the cheaper ips for gaming or the possibly better tn? I will be mostly gaming but i will watch some movies etc. I may also look into dual monitors so which is better for that as well?

Do you do any FPS gaming? If you take FPS gaming seriously I would recommend a low response TN panel. If you play other types of games like WoW, Diablo 3, racing games, etc then I would go with a IPS panel.

As for dual monitor setups, I love having my primary screen as my gaming TN, and secondary is my IPS for browsing/videos. It's awesome and I would recommend this setup.

TN panel colors aren't bad, they just aren't *as good* as IPS.

Well I play different types of games from rts to fps, but I do like to play fps (bf4/titanfall) competitively. Do you think I would notice any differences in fps games from a 5ms ips to a 2ms tn? I would like to go with dual monitor but im not sure yet if I will be able to, so I would like the monitor to ideally look great and game great. Thanks for the quick responses btw

I think you would notice a difference going from the IPS to TN. the 5ms is the G2G response time which affects ghosting. 5ms is usually enough to prevent ghosting.

Another thing though, is input lag which they don't usually report. A lot of times IPS panels have a longer input lag delay time. If possible try to search for input lag tests on any monitors you are considering. If the IPS happens to be low input lag, then I would go for it. But generally TN panels have very little input lag. Usually the monitors that are geared towards gamin do well in this area (some BenQ series and ASUS series).

Ok thank you so much its still a tough decision I may have to go in store just to see the tn v ips difference. If I were to Ips i would get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?SID=71c55f30... how would this one do in gaming? Or this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... Both are ips and 5ms, and from what I can tell almost identical except the 24in has speakers which i do not need. Which would you suggest for the quality/gaming performance?

I actually have the VN248H-P as my IPS monitor. If you want, when i get home today, I can try playing some FPS games on it to compare how it performs to my gaming TN? If it performs well with low input lag I would definitely recommend it because it looks pretty good.

That would be amazing! I would appreciate that a lot.

Ok so I played a few games on both of my monitors to compare. I turned my gaming monitor down to 60Hz to make a fair comparison, since I usually have it at 144Hz. It's 1ms response time though.

The VN248H-P did pretty well for gaming. I think there was a small amount of ghosting, because the picture was just slightly more choppy than my TN panel. If you are used to playing on 60Hz monitors, you honestly might not even be able to tell. But since I have been gaming on my 144Hz monitor for awhile, it was noticeable to me.

There was also small amount of input lag compared to my primary VG248QE which is gaming oriented. It wasn't as bad as I expected, but it was still there. It's just a few ms of delay. I am sensitive to input delay though, you might not even notice if you have always played on standard LCD monitors. I played CS:GO which requires really good accuracy and delay would really hurt you, and it was playable with the VN248H-P. If CS:GO is playable, then just about any FPS should be playable as well.

Conclusion - it was definitely playable, but the overall experience is not as good as my gaming oriented TN panel. The TN just is slightly better in every aspect besides the color. I felt more "connected" to the game, everything is instant. There was a plus though with the IPS, which is the colors looking a little better. During gameplay, it's not something that you pay attention to, at least on games like Counterstrike. On games where you can take in the scenery, like Assassin's Creed, the IPS would definitely look a little better (plus browsing, movies, etc).

If you aren't too worried

Thank you so much for your time to do that mini test! I think that helped to convince me to get a tn with better response time, after all the purpose of my build is gaming. If I want an ips monitor I can always do dual like yours one ips one tn. I was thinking about this tn model. What are your thoughts? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

I would go for the VX248H. Seems like it would be better for gaming.

How long do you think it would be until you add a secondary monitor? It's pretty awesome, I would recommend it. I ask because I am really enjoying my 144Hz monitor, and I would recommend it if you are into gaming. Problem, is that it's $100 more. 144 Hz is really awesome, and today having to play on the screens at 60Hz today was annoying. If you can spare ~$270 for the ASUS 144Hz monitor either now, or in the near future I would recommend doing that.

If you think you would be interested in doing that in a few months, then maybe you could get the IPS instead. The IPS is on sale now too which helps, but I suppose this would all depend on your budget.

Well im not 100% if I wil be able to do dual monitors. I really want to but im not sure if it would fit in the dorm ill be living at next semester. Plus money lol. But I would for sure want to add an ips, I think the 60hz with 1ms response time would be good enough gaming wise for me, at least for now lol. Ideally I would get the ips now and a 144hz later, but idk if thats logistically possible for me. I heard that I could oc the 60hz monitor is this advisable or no? and also how is playing with 2 side by side screens not in fps but rpg and such do you ever do it?

I don't know much about overclocking monitors, but i think usually people do it with korean brands like QNix or whatever its called. I haven't used both screens to play a game, but I have been considering it for diablo 3. I think it would be annoying though because the character would be right in the center and be split in half, and targeting might be weird.

But sometimes I have other stuff on the secondary screen while gaming. Earlier I was farming a few things on Diablo 3 while watching/listening to Archer on the secondary screen. It's awesome. Whenever I have to use a computer with 1 screen it sucks, dual monitors allows more productivity.
