Hello. I'm new here, and as my first post, i'm asking what would be the best graphics card for my system.

I've done a bit of googling, but to no end, and so i'm asking on a forum here, in the hopes that i get answered.

As you probably already know, i'd like a budget graphics card - anywhere from $0-$250 is fine, to be used for moderate indie gaming on a linux system and hobby/amateur CGI. I have found that my current graphics card simply does not cut it. (ATI radeon HD 2xxxx - this thing is from the dinosaur age.) I have no quarrels with my CPU/RAM, but i have read that it would make sense to upgrade my CPU as well as my Graphics card, depending on how old the system is.

I found a thread about how to ask advice for a new GPU (http://) and i have filled it out below:
APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Anytime within 3-4 months - although i'm still only looking.
BUDGET RANGE: $250 AUD (excluding shipping/GST and extra hardware costs)

USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Moderate linux indie gaming (Rust, Space engineers - i know windows only, Most survival games, Gmod, TF2, Portal(1 & 2), etc etc.), Hobbyist Blender CGI and Image editing.

CURRENT GPU AND POWER SUPPLY: Current Graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT, Power supply is Dell MH300 275W Power Supply XPS 210 (Default package for the Optiplex 755)

OTHER RELEVANT SYSTEM SPECS: CPU is an Intel Core 2 duo E7200 @ 2.53GHz (according to my hardware probe - i have 2 - processor 0 & 1) with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, sorry, could not find Mobo specs.

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: I'm not too picky, but, newegg.com, PCCasegear.com and various retail stores. I live in Sydney, NSW, Australia

PARTS PREFERENCES: None. Anything that will work with my system, and should have at least 1GB VRAM. But i shall leave that up to you, as my experience here is very limited.

OVERCLOCKING: No. SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Not sure.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1280x1024.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Must meet my needs above. The budget is a guideline, and as normal with guidelines, i'd prefer if most stuck to it, but they don't have to. I am not expecting to get ultra fine detail from this upgrade, but just to make most indie 3D games playable on my system. If any extra upgrades must be made (Power supply, case, etc. Please give me some detailed information.) I use a desktop case version (dell has mini-tower, desktop, and 2 lower sizes.)

Feel free to ask for more information.

Thank you.

After reading that nice long form, please give me any advice you have, and help me along the way, as graphics cards are quite new to me and i'm still grasping the concept. (I've only ever understood CPU and RAM, and the only upgrade i've done is installing extra RAM sticks into my computer.) If you require any extra information, or i'm over-reaching with my expectations for the card, feel free to ask/tell me.

And the best of luck, and a big thank you in advance to anyone who helps.

If you don't want to upgrade the psu would the gtx 750 ti probably be the best choice siince it doesn't require extra power connectors. The 750 ti cannot do sli so keep that in mind.
A list of cards to compare with, read some reviews and keep in mind that the r7 260X needs an extra power connector and it's a little slower too.

I don't know how linux works with the 750 ti nor the r7 260x or the other way around, you should google that for yourself.

Linux should be fine, and will do. If i were to upgrade my PSU, what would it be to? Also, I don't think my current Mobo/case will let me have more than 1 video card, so SLI should not be a problem. Unless i somehow win the lottery or something.

EDIT: Will my motherboard do fine with this? (I know i didn't specify) I couldn't find the Mobo specs on my hardware info, so i might open up my computer later and take a close look.

Thank you for replying, and i will check the list you sent me.

Yes, i do believe it is. So it works with a PCI x16 pin. (i checked the mobo) It meets my requirements... My only quarrel is that i might need a new case, as the size seems bigger than the case i own. But that would be a simple matter. Well. Thanks a lot for your help, i shall now solve this thread.
