Okay so I recently got into the whole custom PC thing and really want to build my own computer. This is my first post as well so I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong category or something like that. Anyway I want to know if this build will work =, I have a strict 700 dollar budget for tis gaming PC and I want to be able to run several games on Steam without much problem on relatively high settings (Ex. Skyrim, Goat Simulator, Warframe, Bioshock, Titanfall, ect.) . Anyway here it is.

CPU: AMD FX 6300
Motherboard: BIOSTAR TA970
GPU: XFX R7-260X-CDF4
RAM: x2 4gig GeIL EVO POTENZA DDR3 SDRAM 1333
SSD: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB
Hard Drive:Western Digital WD10EZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5"
Case: NZXT Source 530 CA-SO530-M1
Power Supply: CougarA500 500W

Okay, so that's it. What I basically need to know is if I can get the performance I want for this, what I can tweak to make it better without going over the very strict budget and also, if this build will even work. Bear in mind as I mentioned earlier I am a complete noob.

Thank you very much in advance, any help is appreciated.

You would get reasonable performance, however, if I had $700 I would spend it on this:

Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3wWuH/by_merchant/
Benchmarks: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3wWuH/benchmarks/

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($114.97 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($54.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($56.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card ($319.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Corsair 300R ATX Mid Tower Case ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($37.99 @ Newegg)

Would that set up give me better performance than what I had? If so how much? And could you please tell me what exactly was wrong with mine? Sorry, I'm just trying to learn all I can.

You're not getting the performance you can get for $700. My system improves massively over yours. There is a huge gain in everything with the GTX 770 and it is just hugely better and your system will be more future proof.

DeadGraphics advice is perfect.
His suggested system is much better than your original idea.
Why?

1) He picked top brands, you really didn't.
2) You don't put an SSD in a $700 system. Priority is the video card. Your video card is weak. His video card is great.
3) I agree with including a DVD burner.

If you are going to overclock, you will need a cooler. You said you are a noob, so it's better not to overclock I think.

I would recommend a few changes to DeadGraphics build:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($56.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 770 2GB TWIN FROZR Video Card ($319.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: XFX 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($49.99 @ NCIX US)
Optical Drive: Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer ($19.98 @ OutletPC)
Total: $726.90

-mobo- It is a better idea to get a ATX board when you have an atx case, give you more room for your build/upgrades
-RAM- You typically want to get 2 sticks of ram instead of 1, running at dual channel gets you about 13% more performance out of your ram, always recommended
-PSU- The corsair cx series uses chinese capacitors, they are good for the absolutely tightest budgets but here I would recommend the XFX 550w, it is more than enough to power your system and made by seasonic, who are pretty much the best PSU manufacturer.

FYI: none of these motherboards are good for overclocking, if you want to overclock in the future then you would want a better motherboard with a 8 pahse VRM.

Yes I agree because I didn't know that at the time and have now built a computer using an xfx power supply
