Hi,

I have a 15 4670k (Gelid cooler), 8gb corsair XMS ram, a HD 6970 (with hybrid cooler) and have this on a MSI H81m mobo.

Appart from the board being tiny in my corsair air carbide 450 case (it looks ridiculous) I know the features and support are bad on this board. For example I went to OC my RAM as it is capable of higher speeds, but my mobo doesn't support higher speeds. I would also like to very lightly OC my processor else it was a waste getting the k version.

I have looked at several higher end MOBO, namely the maximus hero (about £150) and the MPower (The same with water cooler)

But after seeing boards like the AsRock Z87 PRO3 (£70) I want to know what is the sweet spot for my gaming needs. I use my PC for lots of gaming, and want to get parts that will last me for a fair while.

I also read about the haswell refresh cpu's coming out shortly, and that more specced up boards will be coming out soon. So this would knock down the price of the boards I'm looking at and if they are 1150 chipset (some say it is, some say not) then I could buy a better board if I wait a little.

A friend of mine is selling his gtx 790ti classified for £450 (installed for 1 month) so I'm thinking if I save a bit on the mobo, but still get a decent one, then I will have more money spare to go toward his card.

Any help is greatly appreciated

You have the motherboard in my mind in your own response;
AsRock Z87 PRO3

A motherboard does not effect gaming performance at all, just more features; I.E. Multi-GPU support, OC (But with a Z87 chipset that's all you'll need for OC), SATA 6GB/s ect..

The ASRock Z87 PRO3 will perform exactly the same as the really expensive motherboards and will support extremne end GPU's, like the GTX 780Ti which you are willing to get.

Through all this, a decent PSU 650W+ (As you may OC and need the headroom) and a roomy case is advised.

My PSU rule; Antec/Corsair/Seasonic/XFX With at least 80+ BRONZE certification with at minimum 5 years warranty, then you know your looking at something quality.

Hope this helps.

Yes I have the corsair air carbide 450 case so plenty of space and great cooling. As for psu I have the ocz 650w bronze 80+. So that should be fine too. Currently running the hd 6970 which is very power hungry, running fine.

So the msi gaming board isn't a good step up from that board then? I read the blurb and it mentioned faster ports for mouse response times and better sound reproduction. But it is £20 more expensive.
