4pin fan on motherboard with 3pin fan

Can I connect my 3 pin fan to a 4pin Chassis Fan Connector on my mobo? The diagram states from left to right.. Fan Speed Control, Fan Speed, 12V and Ground. Thanks.

Yes that will work.
There is just one way you can mount it so it would fit :) 
The 4th Pin is basically just for command.

As I understand it- a 4 pin fan uses PWM (pulse width modulation) to adjust speed, whereas a 3 pin fan uses variable voltage. It depends on your motherboard if it supports both or only PWM. If you connect your 3 pin fan to the 4 pin connector and the board *doesn't* support voltage regulation it will just run at full speed. If I were you I'd invest in a 4 pin fan.
