Pcie is always back wards compatible meaning it will work. Pcie 3 will work on Pcie 2 and Pcie 2 will work with Pcie 1. The difference lands in bandwidth with pcie 3 having the most pcie 2 having half of pcie 3 and Pcie 1 will have 1/4 bandwidth of pcie 3 which will make a difference in the higher end cards like 780ti.

The only catch is that some newer cards have issues with PCIe 1 revision slots. From what I have read, the AMD cards more so than nVidia. And that does not apply to all PCIe 1 slots.

What you need to do is list your current system with full specs including case type and power supply, and your budget. You're really asking the wrong question here. What you should do is ask "what card is good for my system for X amount of $, this is my computer specs".
