I have an external drive from a deceased computer that contains several obsolete backups. Since the computer name for the current computer does not match the one which created the old backups the "manage backup space" window will not poll them for deletion. How do I delete these files?

Solution
If the drive has nothing else you want to save, you could/should do a quick format. This will clear the drive of everything. If only the backup files are what you want to be rid of, go to the root folder containing them and delete it. You may have to go to the contents and delete some of the sub-folders and items first.
