Hard drive adapter to accept newer SATA drives into older configurations using IDE drives.

I am wondering if the IDE to SATA adapters have any draw backs as to data transfer or speed of transfer? I have older computers that I am considering using the drive adapters in, to increase the capacity of the storage on my machines. Each machine is in the 3.2 to 2.6 GHz range using Intel Celeron type of processors with 2G of Memory each.
Thanks

I have been using this last week an external Toshiba 1T Canvio Portable Hard drive to move some files and that got me thinking about the adapter to convert a desktop's hard rive type. I am concerned because I think of adopters as a "Make Do" type approach.
Littleleo, as you have pointed out, this was a concern of mine also and I thank you for the feedback.
