It's been a while since I took physics class so I can't remember this type of scenario correctly.

If I add 2 GPUs that take 25 amps each, and for a PSU which is rated as say 45 amp on the +12v rail or 20 amps on 2 +12v rails, will the GPUs and power supply function properly, or would this require me to upgrade the PSU? If so, would I need to perform an upgrade under both scenarios, or just 1?

Solution
its a lot more complicated then that that i would not use a borderline power supply but the answer is more complicated because it depends on which rail the graphics cards draw from as if its from the first rail it might work because overcurrent protection is usually set about 20% above the specified limit so for a 45a 12v rail it would be about 54 amps but for the 20 amp at 12v it would be 24amps but i would caution against it because running a psu at max load is not a good thing
