I have an old GeForce 8800 GTX video card that I would love to update, but think I'll wait because I'm already running over budget as I revitalize my old computer. I will tell you what I'm getting, hoping for a suggestion or two, and you can tell me if I really need to pony up the cash for a new video card at this point.

-Western Digital WD VelociRaptor WD1000CHTZ 1TB 10000 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Enterprise Hard Drive Bare Drive,
-ORICO PVU3-5O2U 7 USB 3.0 Ports Desktop PCI - Express Card,
-Intel Core i7-4770K Haswell 3.5GHz,
-ASUS MAXIMUS VI FORMULA LGA 1150 Intel Z87 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX gaming board with double-sided ROG Armor,
-HyperX Beast 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) ***SHOULD I GET THE 2400 INSTEAD???

I'm getting some other things as well, but this should suffice for this conversation.

Thanks. My items are at the Newegg checkout....

UPDATE: Thanks, everyone for your input!

I will play the occasional game (oblivion). I do much more CAD work, a lot of spreadsheets (Excel, mostly, which doesn't use much in the way of resources), an increasing amount of video editing, for fun, work, and for my exacting father-in-law. I will have good cooling, and I want this system to be current-ish for a few years.

Regarding the GPU: It has been said that in general the Intel 4600 graphics of the Intel i7 4770K are up to handling photo editing tasks with reasonable speed and that there is no need to install a dedicated graphics card. I can, of course for 3D, but... I'll get the 2400 mhz RAM, as well, since it's nearly the same price, and I could overclock it.

My tower case is still useable, as is my 700w power supply and yes, the GeForce 8800 GTX is from 2006. My budget is $1,500.

I'd discourage you from both the Velociraptor and the 32GB of RAM.

A normal 7200 RPM should suffice and the difference from the 10000 RPM would not be noticed. Get a SSD for the OS and most used programs instead.

8GB of RAM is enough for everything you can throw at your computer save for large video editing tasks.

You can tell us the budget and specific use for this computer to give you further advice.

You forgot a very important thing: what will be the main purpose of this PC?

Obviously, if it's for gaming, you could cut back in costs by a LOT and get a good GPU.

If it's puely for video editing or rendering, then you still cut back costs quite a bit.

That Video Card will get the wokout of it's life with that Haswell 4770k, I would definately watch the temps on that card carefully.

The 8800 gt is from 2007 am I correct..?? I had two of those, years ago..

Also get the 2400 mhz RAM, the 1600 mhz is going to hold you back big time. You can even go HIGHER mhz RAM on that chip, but the price is going to go way up.

1600 mhz is for old AMD CPUs, currently the AMD FX series NoseDiver series in 1866 by default. I have a very good friend running a 4770k Haswell with 16 gbs of 2400 MHZ RAM, and it just stomps all over the FX-8350.

I was AMD for over a decade, and now i'm jumping ship to intel, after watching what a 4770k clocked to 4.6 ghz do to an FX-8350 at 4.875 ghz to 5.0ghz , i'm completely convinced that AMD is no longer the alternative if I want to save $30.00 build.. Nobody ever tells you it will take $200.00 to $400.00 in water cooling to clock a FX-8350 up 5.0 ghz, and also that you have to have a $220.00 990FX mobo to get there, when the 4770k can perform BETTER then the FX on a $130.00 Mobo.. I watched it happen, and I watched my friend's face with the FX-8350 just start to contort, and make all kinds of excuses.. AMD isn't the budget way to go when you MUST factor in cooling cost and big PSU.
END OF STORY.
