Flash drive not showing up in "My computer"

I tried all USB ports with no success. Computer does make the sound suggesting that the device is connected but nothing shows up on screen. I tried to connect other devices and they all work fine, I tried to plug the drive to another Laptop and it showed up there. It is reocgnized in computer management but not in DIsk drivers but in USB controllers as Mass Storage but it shows an exclamation mark. I tried to klick on drivers update but it doesn't work, it says that it found the driver but the access was denied :( I'm desperate because I need that drive tomorrow for my school project, Thanks for any help. I have an HP 255 G1, WIndows 7 Ultimate

More about flash drive showing computer
  1. You need to assign it a drive letter.

    Go to:
    Control Panel
    Admin tools
    Computer management
    Disk management

You should see your drive that you can't access. Right click on the drive header and select 'Online'

If it is already online, then assign it a drive letter that isn't already in use.

Now you should see it in your 'My Computer area' and you should be able to access it.
  2. thanks! I will try it
  3. unfortunately, it doesn't show up there, it shows up in Device management in "Other devices" with the exclamation mark as I've written above

Try formatting it from another computer.
  5. already did that
  6. Have you tested the ports with other USB devices? You could try deleting the ports in Device Manager and then rebooting the computer. Windows should recognize the ports after the reboot.
  7. I have, even with another flash drive I borrowed from my sister and it worked
  8. What is the brand and storage capacity of the drive? Just wondering if a driver is available from the manufacturer.
  9. it's 8gb and I'm not sure about the manufacturer, It's not printed on it, it has a logo of European Union on it but I suppose it's not Sandisk as my Sister's Cruzer works fine. I have a feeling it's a Kingston so I will try to download their drivers
  10. I noticed access was denied when you tried to use driver update. Are you an administrator on that computer? If yes, have you tried running driver update as an administrator? Try right clicking and see if "Run as Administrator" is an option.
  11. I am the administrator and I always run the "Manage Option" when I right click on "My Computer" as an administator since it has that icon there but when I klick the update options itself, there's only one option
  12. What hapens if you try it after booting into Safe Mode? Not sure it will make a difference but may be worth a shot.
  13. I tried to plug it to two older laptops we have at home
Laptop with WIndows XP - It works perfectly fine
Netbook wit W7 Starter - It says "the device wasn't recognized"

Not quite sure what to tell you to try next. Did you format the drive using a Windows 7 computer (not that it should matter)?
  15. Now I'm quite sure it's kingston because I bought a brand Kingston new one, plugged it in and it said "Software wasn't installed succesfully" and it doesn't appear in "My Computer" either
  16. You could try here to see if a driver is available from Kingston - http://www.kingston.com/us/support/technical/search
  17. I downloaded urDrive from their site but after installing, when I klick on it it says "This drive is not authorized for this software" even though it was the exact one I have on their website
  18. also I noticed, that those two drives that dont work make a different sound than the one that works, liek it was signalizing some error while plugging, the new one also perfectly works on the XP Laptop and I formatted it there but it didn't help
  19. official local store, it says on kingston website that this error can occur and deleting registers could help but I deleted them and it still does the same
  20. Did you reboot after deleting the registers?
  21. I did

Running out of ideas here. The first link is from the Kingston site and though it may be a different flash drive model maybe you can find something useful on the page. The second link is a video on assigning a drive letter. I believe you have already tried this though.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBGBC7OGqQM&feature=youtu.be

"1) go to start then run type cmd
    2) right click on cmd and choose launch as administrator
    3) type diskpart hit enter
    4) type list disk hit enter
do you see your usb key there?"

  23. it doesn't show up in cmd :/ I guess my PC detects it but as an unknown device and nto as a disk but when I can't update drivers I dont know what to do :/
  24. Hopefully someone else will chime in who can be of more help than I have been. I'll keep following this thread and post if I find something that would help.
  25. SOmeone suggested me reinstalling my motherboard and chipset drivers, I'd love to do that but I have trouble finding them asi HP Website doesn't have anything, can someone help me with that? The motherboard type is Hewlett Packard 188b
  26. I found this too but is there the driver I need? I can't see it

Have you tried the HP 2005pr USB 2.0 Port Replicator driver?
  28. Thank you so much for this help, my device is working properly now
  29. I tried this method and it's works...
Connect your pen drive which is not located in my computer. Go to device manager - universal serial bus controller -right click on USB mass storage device which is located by yellow exclamation mark- properties - driver- update driver - select Browse my computer for drivers software - select Let me pick from a list device drivers on my computer - double click on USB mass storage device shown in model box-and the problem is solved...

  32. Search for device manager under control panel
    Look for "Other Devices"
    Click it
Then right click on the file, select update driver software.
  33. I had this problem too. Turned out I'd mixed up my mouse's Bluetooth dongle with the pen drive. D'oh!

  36. Hi RCguitarist,

    For me it was in

    Control Panel
    Admin tools
    Computer management
    Disk Drives

USB was disabled there and just enabled it.

Your comment guided me there though.
    So thank you so much.

Nope, it is not showing up there either.
  38. Hello All,

I am facing the same issue with Toshiba Transmemory Flash Drive 16GB, it is not recognized on my windows 7. My C: and D: harddisk drives are always showing but the flash drive is not showing... I can see that the drive is online under Disk Management but I am wondering why I can't see it when I click on my computer

just like any flash memory device controller can die, and device becomes inaccessible
if you need data recovered then you would need something like this:

Happened to me too. Showed up on Minitool Partition Wizard, and I changed the drive letter from there. Works fine for me.

Used Minitool Partition Wizard to wipe the drive then format it worked great for me! I originally put 2 flash drives in Raid 0 together on a Mac and I didn't have access to the Mac to undo it so I had to do it on my PC, this is what worked for me!

  42. and me also i have that problem but i try your way but it does not work because it show the removable disk but the space show 0MB but the flash driver have 32GB Please help me
  43. I had exactly the same problem. I finally found the solution.
Go to Device Manager, then under Disk Drives you will see your flash drive name.
Right click on it, then choose uninstall.
Then remove your flash drive and put it in again.

The first rule of . . . computing is reboot. I had the same thing happened. Flash drive didn't work on one computer but worked fine on others. Reboot, Sparky. All this other crap about needing to know the manufacturer etc. is someone who has way too much time and not enough sense. Probably some dopey guy. Girls rule! See if that works.
  45. I hope this is useful to someone. I tried virtually all the above suggestions but nothing worked for me. I then tried renaming the memory stick and it now works perfectly!
