So, lately i installed a new motherboard, GPU, CPU and an aftermarket cooler for it. Now, after a 5 days or so i've been hearing noise from the innards of my computer.

It seems to be a bit louder while Planetside 2 is on the screen, than it would be with say like Diablo 3 on. And there is noise only if the game is right there on the screen, if alt-tabbed or anything, it stops.

The noise itself sounds like metal vibration of some kind, though i'm horrible at describing anything.

I'll be re-checking the mounting on the GPU, CPU and the cooler tomorrow, but for now do you guys have any ideas?

Motherboard: ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0
GPU: R9 280
CPU: FX-8350
CPU cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
PSU: Antec somethingsomething 750W

Probably coil whine. Turn on Vsync in the game settings and see if it goes away.

Could be coil-whine from the GPU. Its caused when the GPU is put under heavy load sometimes. I would RMA that card because its a defect and is not normal. The 280X is a high quality card you should not have that problem.

coil whine
It's coming most likely from the gpu but it's not lethal or anything, merely annoying if it gets too loud. And as you have discovered the loudness and the tone of the noise depends on the load the gpu is under, so the game, fps etc has an effect on it.

Some folks have succesfully fixed the issue with hot glue but that only works if the coil packages are open at the top (ie the wire visible), most aren't these days...

Does it sound like this?

Because I was under the impression that coil whine was a defect (At least Nvidia feels it is) AMD's 7970 (which is a 280X) have awful coil whine and they do not think its an issue at all -.-

I've been under the impression that it depends on the AIB partner whether they think it is a defect worth a RMA or not...

Yeah its a common problem and you may or may not be able to RMA it. My Seasonic and Corsair PSUs had coil whine and I was able to exchange both of them.

I doubt it's coil whine, doesn't sounds anything like the sound in the video. Instead of a metallic vibration it sounds more like a buzzing insect like a fly or something but lower.

Tried to stop the fans for half-second to see if the sound would cease but it didn't.. And i forgot to mention that my CPU fan is very close to the GPU, so it's hard to distinguish exactly where the sound is coming from.

Also getting an RMA would be pain because i ordered these parts from Germany and i live in Finland =)

Also as i continuously fail to mention things, the sound started like just two hours ago, no problem whatsoever before that.

Installed the CPU cooler yesterday, i doubt i fastened the thing THAT badly that it would start making noise after a nights rest.

HWMonitor also shows good temperatures all across the board.

Might just be coil whine, as the noise somewhat reacts to what i do in-game.

And as long as this is no harm to my machine it's ok for me!

Thanks for all the replies,i appreciate the help!
