Your "buddy" is more clever than you think, the FX 8320 could handle cards like the GTX 780Ti. The HD 7770 is definitely causing a bottleneck.

I would disagree. Bottlenecking is situational. Your computer is fine.

If it runs how you like it, theres no need to fix it. If it aint broke, dont fix it :)

True, it is situational, but in most modern games that GPU will be the limiting factor, not the CPU.

Your buddy is correct on some level that your GPU is likely is the main bottleneck in games. However you must realize that some component be it a CPU, GPU, memory, or hard drive / SSD will cause a bottleneck. Every system has a bottleneck and the moment you make that fast enough then something else will be a bottleneck. Think of like if they raised the speed limit on the highway to 1000 miles per hour then all cars max speed are now the bottle neck not the speed limit. The point being if your frame rates are fine then don't worry about anymore than if you worried about trying to go 1000mph on the highway as at a certain point your going fast enough.

This might actually be the most coherent definition of bottlenecking I have ever seen.

The HD 7770 is an entry level gaming card, it is definitely holding you back in games.

Its so weird that the GTX460 (which equals the 6850 which equals the 7770) used to be a really good mid range card that could hold its own in several games.

Honestly it still can, but it is categorized as a lower end card now. Its ridiculous how fast things move.

Honestly OP, if your computer performs to your liking, I wouldnt change a thing. If you feel something lacking, the first thing to change would be the GPU since the CPU still has some headroom.

What I would do with your system: Get a good aftermarket cooler, set multiplier to 20 to match FX 8350 speeds, get the best graphics card you can that your PSU can handle. I have an FX 8320 bumped to FX 8350 paired with one of my old HD 5850's. A 5850 is just slightly faster than what you have now, and I know it holds the system back.

the FX-8320 is plenty enough to unleash the full power of even an highly overclocked GTX 780 i can confirm you that, even at stock speed this CPU is still very high-end and this low-end graphics card is defenetly holding you back in every games you play unless you play at 1024x768 on a 4:3 monitor...for 1080p get a GTX 760, GTX 770 or GTX 780, AMD graphics card equivalent are r9 270x, r9 280(x) and r9 290(x) so check your budget and PSU (you could tell us your PSU wattage and exact model that would help to begin with :) ...)
