Is an upgrade warranted?

I'm trying to increase my FPS in games but more specifically in Elder Scrolls Online (MMO) which I normally get ~40 FPS. I understand MMOs are CPU heavy which is why I am considering a new CPU/MB.

I've been looking into upgrades even before Elder Scrolls. I wasn't quite satisfied with my computer's performance with Titanfall. BF4 ran fine but not at ultra settings (high I believe). I am thinking a CPU upgrade might give me the best bang for my buck unless you all think GPU might be a better way to go.

Current Specs:
i5 2500K @ 3.3
Radeon HD 7970
16 GB SDRAM DDR3 Ram Corsair Vengeance
910W PSU
Crucial M4 SSD + HDD

So the question is: is a CPU upgrade warranted? If so, which would you recommend purely on gaming? I am okay with anything $350 and below. MB recommendations would be great too.

If my CPU isn't the problem, then what would you recommend me upgrading to?

Yea, I would just overclock. Find out where the multiplier setting is in your bios and set it to 40. Leave everything else alone. You will be at 4.0ghz and it should help your performance issues some. Ivy and haswell are not all that much faster than what you have now.

Done.

At what idle temperature and stress temperature (gaming) should I be concerned with?

This will also let me know if I can push it even higher.

You shouldn't have to worry about temps with your combo. My system isn't really all that much different than yours. Max temp is 72ish, but I don't recall ever hitting 60c on mine. You should be able to push it higher, but it is a bit of a gamble on how much further it will go. I have seen plenty of 2500k's hit the 4.5ghz mark. You might want to look up some overclocking guides for your particular motherboard/cpu combo.

I used intel extreme tuner to stress test my 3570k at 4.2ghz and it only got to like 52c or 53c IIRC, seemed like really good temps, I should try to push it to 4.5ghz for the hell of it lol.

Anyway, yeah, your 2500k is MORE than fine for any game to come, just overclock it :p
