I bought my Dell XPS laptop in 2010. The drive is corrupted.
Explorer and Mozilla crash almost immediately. I have the
Reinstallation DVD that came with the laptop and I have copied
my files to an external hard drive. Before I format, how do I
prove I own this copy of Win 7? There is no s/n on the red DVD.
Is it the # I see when I right click on my computer?

Sorry, old and slow

Check the outside of your laptop chassis. The company usually sticks it somewhere on the case (usually on the bottom) so that customers won't loose it too easily, and so they can also sell the computer without an install disk (for OEM reasons).

Well, I looked all over my laptop and could not find it anywhere so I removed the battery and did not see it, but then I noticed a little stamp on the battery in the corner, not even the size of a postage stamp. It has a scanner symbol on it like the kind people read in the grocery store with their cell phones. There were numbers I could not read so I found my old magnifying loupe from when I was a photoengraver in the 60's and sure enough, there are numbers, but surely these are not the numbers for Windows7 ??????????

You know, this is probably my 6th Dell. I bought it new, well, refurbished from Dell and I never even noticed there was no sticker, no serial number, no stickers on it and I would think I would have noticed that unless one of the grand kids pulled it off. Well, I have the CD that came with it, but ..... and I don't want Win 8.
Hey, thanks for your time.

Yep, I ran a program called Jelly Bean which gave me my COA. Then I ran my DVD and everything seemed to go well except a different # came up under the (right click my computer), but it says windows is activated. It is now Windows 7 Professional instead of Windows 7 Ultimate, which I do not understand. I am in the middle of downloading drivers from the Dell site. My wife just told me I need to use something different than Internet Explorer because the local News says it has security issues. Oh well. I can live with Win 7 Prof, but I don't understand the change and the no need for COA.Strange.

Again, thanks for your help.
