I started getting blue screens when booting. This was right after I opened the computer to dust and took out the ram and put it back, I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I booted up system recovery, tried to fix the problem, didn't do anything, then I saw that the drive letter of the booting drive had changed from c: to d:, is this the problem? How do I fix it?

First off, I would ensure you have plugged your HDD into the same SATA connector as it was before cleaning the case. I would suggest the first cluster and the top plug of that cluster, but that will depend on what it was before.

You can also try changing the boot order of your components. Depending on your BIOS model, you should have a menu for boot options. Once in there, you should be able to change your boot order and even the drive letter (again depending on the BIOS model).

Do you have access to your computer at all or does it stop upon booting the OS? If you do, try and enter safemode. Open the run window by pressing *Windowskey*+R and typing in diskmgmt.msc. You should see all your drives there and you can allocate a different letter name to the drive of your choosing.

To Nerumph:
Your question, "Do you have access to your computer at all or does it stop upon booting the OS? hit home with me, because my Win 7 upon attempting to boot gets to "Starting Windows" and will not go farther to boot up. Also will not go into safe mode.

I tried to use Windows Repair from the installation disk, but got the message it cannot be repaired automatically. I tried loading drivers as the other selection, but wound up with the drive letters changed.

My computer has a drive with XP installed and another with Win 7 installed. I am able to substitute one for the other into a single bay, so I never have both installed at the same time. I also have 2 separate installed drives, one of which is partitioned D and E, and the other labeled F.

My XP drive will run, but when I boot up, I get a message that the F drive needs to be checked by CHKDSK. It is not able to successfully complete that whoe operation, hanging on the repairing of the MFT Mirror, after doing other verifications, so I just avoid that by clicking a key.

So my main problem is trying to use my Win 7 drive. If I could restore to a previous date, that would likely work for me, but I don't know how to get it to do that.

Any suggestions as to how I can get into my Win 7 drive? Thanks.
