I want to know whether its safe to overclock my msi r9 280X 3Gb GPU with my setup. I use the msi gaming app with three operating modes (silent, gaming and overclock), each with its different clock rate. I've never used the overclock function before on the app.
My specs- CPU- Intel i5-2400 @3.10Ghz
Mobo- Gigabyte B-75M-D3H
RAM- 12 GB DDR3
GPU- MSI R9 280X 3GB DDR5
PSU- Gigabyte Superb E620
Any help would be appreciated.

Yep. Do some research first eg http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=383086

You need to find out what gpu and memory clocks were set and what voltage was used. Overclocks should be tested before keeping them.

Me? I don't keep anything overclocked. I like to know I'm looking after my cpu and graphics cards as best as I can. I don't really have the money to replace them. Besides I'm happy with how my pc goes without overclocking. Everything stays nice and cool and quiet

I recommend using Afterburner and it's attached Kombustor testing software. You can download it for free http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/
