The 280X is just a overclocked 280 right?

im just asking because i was gonna buy a gigabyte r9-280x but now they have raised the price with 30 euros so now it costs 319 euros while the gigabyte r9-280 only costs 279 euros and is only clocked 28mhz less and that should be easy to self oc and bosst the memory to 6000mhz too as its only 5000 as my 7970 i have atm that i have oc to 1050 core and 6000 mem .

since my 7970 is voltage locked i cant oc it more then 1050 core or it would get artifacts or crash some games.

i think the r9-280 would be closer since it already have 1072mhz boost and 950mhz base core that i will up to 1050mhz too and mem to 6000mhz.

More about : whats difference 280x 280

280 - 7950 Give or take
280x - 7970 Give or take

so, couple hundred shaders, clocks, power requirements, minor changes and adjustments.

The R9 280 is a rebadged 7950, while the 280X is a slightly tweaked 7970 Ghz edittion. So the difference is the same, the 7950 has some parts disabled, so its not as fast as the 7970/280x.

but would the 280 still be better if oc or should i still go with the 280x to crossfire it with my 7970?

rest of my specs are in sig

280x is better. You might be able to oveclock a 280 to catch up with a 280x but if you overclock the 280x it'll be ahead again.

yea i know that but the problem is that i have a gigabyte 7970 1ghz edition and its voltage locked so max oc i can get on it is 1050mhz after that it gets unstable.

and i will crossfire the 7970 with the r9-280x so it will lcock down anyways

R9-280X:

Don't look just at frequency, there is a difference in the number of Stream Processing Units etc. so you want to pair the HD7970 with an R9-280X.

After that, you can LOWER the GPU frequency on one of the cards if needed so they are about the same and both are stable. You don't have to overclock and risk instability.

The 7970/280x is better than the 280 anyway.
