All of a sudden, certain programs won't launch (Windows 8.1)

Hi all, thanks in advance for reading. I'm having (yet another) problem with my PC and Windows 8.1.

I upgraded a couple of weeks ago from Windows 8 to 8.1 and it has been running fine with no issues. Last night I was working on it until late in the evening using all of my regular applications with no trouble. I shut down as normal.

This morning I booted up to continue work and, all of a sudden, some programs won't load - programs which were working fine last night. It's very odd as some will launch fine, but others will either instantly crash or only load in their native 'safe modes'.

Here's a list of ones that are misbehaving:

1) Outlook and all MS Office apps - Outlook will only load in 'safe mode', any others won't even load
2) Firefox - crashes instantly upon launch, with a crash error report. Will only launch in its own safe mode
3) Spotify - flashes the splash loading screen then fails to launch, and quits itself
4) Tweetdeck - fails to load and closes itself

The following apps WILL load fine:

1) All Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Photoshop, Illustrator etc)
2) iTunes
3) CC Cleaner
4) Crashplan

This is very bizarre and frustrating as I'm sure you can understand, as it's not like ALL of my programs won't load. I've tried re-installing the ones that are screwed and it makes no difference, virus scan is clean, and I ran SFC/ SCANNOW with no issues. All Windows updates are up to date too.

If anyone could help I'd really appreciate it, thanks!

Did you try a system restore point?

Maybe an update has messed things up.Did windows do an update before the problems?
  2. Hi Vic

Thanks for your response - the problem has only started today and the PC was fine last night (i.e. everything worked). Windows didn't do any updates before the problem to my knowledge, my system just did a straight shutdown last night then booted up normally this morning without any notifications of updates being configured.

With this in mind I hadn't thought of doing a System Restore, so I'll try that now and get back to you. Thanks again.

Oké,let me know how that works out.
  4. System Restore seems to have done the trick! Thanks Vic 40, I should have thought of that really. Much appreciated.
  5. Glad it worked.:D

  6. I'm having the same problem. Unfortunately, doing a system restore hasn't solved the problem (just messed up other software that I need for work!)

As a point of interest, the programs I am having a problem with are Clementine music player and Telegram (both of which ran fine up until yesterday)
