I want to do a clean reinstall of Windows 8.1 on my Samsung 840 EVO SSD, but it's been a few years since I've done this. Back in the day, I would do a "format c:\" from the command prompt to erase a drive before reinstalling the OS. But I understand things might be different now.

My SSD is not new, and I want to completely erase it before reinstalling. What's the best way to go about that? Should I use the "format" button when selecting the installation volume in Windows 8.1 setup? Should I just use the "clean" command in DiskPart to delete the current partition?

Or is there a better way? Any advice appreciated!

Solution
Yep - do a Clean Install - new format/wipe all data from the drive and partition for the Restore reserve.

When done, you'll probably need to update all the drivers as they would be also wiped with the format.
First I would download what drivers you might need to get the system up and running after the re-install and store them on a USB stick. Most important would be the LAN drivers as with out them you might not be able to even get online.

Boot with your install media and after you enter your Product Key choose Custom Install and go from there.
