This is my first lapping project. I'm lapping 8 enzotech copper vram heatsinks. I'm using wet or dry sandpaper, wet and with dishwashing liquid.

I've been doing this over a couple of days and notice that finished heatsinks that had a mirror finish are growing stains on them, meaning i have to redo the affected ones.

Is there a way to prevent this? I do properly dry them with tissues, clean them with arcticlean and leave them under a fan before setting them aside to do the others.

Before you ask why i am lapping vram heatsinks, they had a layer of aluminum tape with large air bubbles on the contact surface which i removed, but despite my best efforts to remove the adjoining adhesive, only sandpaper can do this effectively. Since I'll be using a thermal adhesive to bond them to the vram, i could do with a good contact surface.

I would glue them on 1 by 1 as soon as they are lapped and clean. Copper is going to oxidize by nature (pennies turn green). The thermal glue will make sure you get a good conductive connection between the chip and the sink and hopefully prevent any oxidation at the points where they meet.
The only other thing to prevent copper from oxidizing is some sort of clear coat, but I don’t know of any type of clear coat or sealer made to be thermal conductive.

I found a good solution on the webby web- finish lapping all 8, let them oxidize, then do a dry lap with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper just before installation.

its definitely more convenient for me as i prefer to finish them all rather than putting them on one at a time since each hs takes 15-20 minutes from 400 to 2000.
