AMD FX 6300 temperature jumped really high all of a sudden!

Hi,

So I was compiling some C++ files (Using GCC's g++) when I heard the fan (For the first time) getting really loud, its speed got over 5000RPM (By default its 3600RPM) so I went to HWMonitor to see the CPU temperature and it was over 70C (By default its around 20C since it uses x7 multiplier), I always compile and play games, and the multiplier gets to x19 or x20 but the CPU never got that hot. Also notice that I have the last two cores (5 and 6) turned off which means I am only using 4 cores. The temps are now back to normal and I am using my computer to post this, but why did it happen all of a sudden? I am scared it would happen again and it might cause damage to the CPU or the MOBO.

Just another question, does the CPU/MOBO melt down/burn if it the CPU gets really hot? Or does the computer simply turn off (Like my old Pentium 4 did)?

Best,
MJaoune

Solution
It will not burn down, it will shut off once it hits a certain temperature. Try reapplying thermal paste, and get an aftermarket cooler if you can.

Thank you for your answer.

Actually I think its because of the thermal paste, but when I try to apply the thermal paste by using the "Pea-size" method, the heatsink starts slipping and I can't spread the thermal paste on the whole CPU and it results that some spots on the CPU don't have the paste over them. Maybe because AMD CPUs and Heatsinks are different? Since I used to apply the pea-size method on my old Intel CPU and I had no problems. (Same thermal paste)
