Ok so I've wanted to build a PC for a while and haven't had the time, and before I do I want to fiddle around with one so I get the hang of it, so down the boot sale I picked up this crummy old case. Get it home it has an AMD Athlon 2200 XP inside with 512kb ram and a 80gb hard drive. . Not great. So tell me this, how can I simply improve the system without spending much so I learn about the parts as well as seeing enough improvement to turn it into a workable PC for the misses?

I'm sure you meant to say 512 megabytes of RAM, Windows couldn't possibly run on only 512 kilobytes.

First thing you need to do is add more RAM as that's the single most effective way to improve general speed and performance. 2 megabytes is preferable as that will improve performance tremendously. Certainly no less then 1 megabyte anyway. That's the absolute minimum for XP for smooth performance.

Not sure which type of RAM it needs? Using that PC, visit crucial.com and use their system scanner:

For CPU upgrade you will need to visit the motherboard makers website and look at the CPU compatibility list for that motherboard model.

Depends on the user. Although I'm pretty sure it's universally agreed upon that 80gb isn't sufficient. What are you hoping to do on your computer? Gaming? Video editing? Do you want to have a lot of large files on there like videos or programs?
