Im in the process of buying a new laptop for school and for gaming at home and Im wondering, does weight really matter all that much? My current laptop is a 17" 7 pound HP. With the power supply its probably more like 8 pounds. I take it to work quite often and the weight doesn't bother me...it really makes me wonder why there is a big sacrifice on performance so that people can have ultra light laptops?

Im looking at buying a new laptop and its 8.6 pounds...with the power supply probably closer to 10...am I gonna regret it when I have to haul it to class everyday? I could get something a few pounds lighter, but then it costs a ton more and is the cooling really that good? It seems to me that if you want something that is going to have high performance and good cooling then that is just a sacrifice you have to make...

Maybe I just dont notice it because Im a big guy...seems like nothing after throwing around my 70 pound kids... :) Maybe its because I dont take public transit or walk anywhere with it...I have to drive everywhere. I dont know, what do you guys think?

Their are laptops for almost any environment. The Panasonic Toughbooks are rugged and sold to the government to be used by the armed forces in the Middle east. The can run up to $5000 and they aren't built with the most powerful components. Gamers like big rigs like the 18.4" Alienware 18 which has lost of breathing room for the heat generated by gaming. Putting a Nvidia GTX 880 is a small case your life expectancy will be shorter because of heat damage. Ultrabooks are built for people on the go especially students the carry the laptops across campus. To me weight doesn't matter I have a 18.4" with a hugs bag. I sometimes carry my 18.4" and my 15.6" and my 10.1 tablet in the same bag.

To summarize weight is important to alot of...

That personal preference I have a 18.4" Acer now that is about 10 pounds with the brick. I'm looking at the Alienware 18.4" with a power brick twice the weight of the Acer. It doesn't bother me so I would say it's personal preference.

To summarize weight is important to alot of people but not all. It's like buying a car where some people are less concerned with gas mileage then others and still buy the Hummer. I myself am a SUV guy and didn't like the 4 cylinder vehicle I had when I was in the 20's. Now because of gas prices and better 4 cyclinder technology I will look at a 4 cylinder SUV for my next vehicle.
