7200RPM HD vs SSD Windows 8.1

I decided to opt for the popular 1TB WD Caviar Blue instead of an SSD in my new gaming rig but im confused.
I know how much faster SSDS are than spinning platters. Yet, startup only takes 8 seconds at the very most and apps open almost instantly. I'm guessing this is some sort of improvement Microsoft have made to windows rather than drive speed, but then its begs the question as to how necessary SSD's are in Windows 8.1?

I suppose my question is how necessary are SSD's in Windows 8.1 and why is my hard drive managing to open apps and start up so quickly? (No complaints!)

usualy 7200rpm HDD should take about a good 30 seconds AT LEAST from computer turned off to up and running and browsing the net for example...SSD's should take 10 to 15 seconds...are you sure you are not waking your computer from sleep mode or exagerating a bit with the 8 seconds boot time? Make sure your computer is turned off and use a chronometer and turn on the power and check until you can be on google...8 second is really quick...my own pc has a top of the line SSD overclocked and it boots in like 12 to 15 seconds flat...wich i consider AWESOME...but also the SSD will allow for much quicker load time in games for example..this is the reason i got one i'm a big BF4 fan and changing maps on my HDD was like 3 minutes and now its 30 seconds so i like that a lot, i'm first in the map everytime so i can pick the tank and the guns and stuff.... :D

8 seconds at the MOST sounds like your computer is merely in sleep mode and not cold booting. My Samsung 840 PRO boots up Windows 8.1 in about 10 seconds from completely off. Same goes for Apps, if you are coming back from sleep, you probably still have the apps cached into RAM.

No honestly mate, its 8 seconds tops, im more than happy to video me shutting it down and turning it on, I literally press the power button, it shows bios screen for a couple seconds, then windows loading page for a few seconds and bang its on?
Here's my set up:
NZXT Phantom FTC
MSI Gaming Z87-G45
i5 4570
1TB WD Caviar Blue
Samsung Optical Drive

Not sure if I've missed anything. (Haven't bought my GPU yet but will in the next couple days. I Heard windows 8.1 and my motherboard have fast boot options so it could be that one of them is enabled. Though im not sure how to turn it on or off...

There is no reason to have an SSD if you are happy with your current loading speeds. I just installed my first SSD, and my computer is at the desktop in 8 seconds flat from POST beep from a cold boot.

Western digital caviar blue is single platter drives and pretty darn fast (I use one as my second storage drive with my SSD as a boot drive).

SSDs don't make alot of difference for gamers. I got a 240 GB SSD because I plan to install a few of my favorite games on it to reduce loading times (in particular, MMOs for "zoning").

Most multiplayer games don't benefit, because even if you have the fastest computer in the game, you are still waiting for the slow people for the match to start ;)

I'm massively happy with it, I mean I knew it was fast but its even faster than my MacBook pro which is incredibly quick. Having webpages load instantly gives me some sort of weird satisfaction haha.

Yeah, ive only noticed SSD's in games when I play a single player from Bethseda mainly. I have an SSD in my MBP (in which it made a difference of several magnitudes) and it was like having the latest MBP. In this rig, everything is almost too quick, I feel like one day it might just slow down or something and ill be terribly upset lol.

I thought this at first but I now have iTunes, OpenOffice Suite, loads of motherboard apps and suites ill probably never use. Many of them listed in the startup programs list, I want to remove them but afraid of damaging something (im good with hardware but not software). A fair few apps from the windows store etc.

Who knows maybe, when caches build it'll slow down. Are there any maintenance apps like CCleaner that you would recommend or is CCleaner the best at PC 'junk' maintenance?

CCleaner is the best free tool. I had my computer for about a month before I downloaded it, and the first time I ran it it got rid of 3.7GB of crap. On a 128GB SSD, that's a lot of space lol
