Hi everyone. I have a general question regarding the wireless network adapter. Would being wired up to my modem yield better connection than a wireless network adapter? I am just on the other side of the modem where a wall is between us approximately two and a half feet away. Should I just drill a hole and connect my PC directly and save a few buck since I already have the cord or should I buy a wireless network adapter?

Solution
it depends. from an internet point of view, nearly no, you might have a little bit less stable connection, but we are probably talking about a drop out or slowing down once a week, that sort of scale.

if you are are talking about connecting to a device on the network for file transfer, then 10/100 is about as fast as wifi, but 1000 is so much quicker, and if you have a Gbe port on the router and one on your machine, and a device (NAS) attached via Gbe attached to the router then it'll be so much better. 60MB/s vs 4-5MB/s
It depends on the quality of the wireless adapter. I used to use those cheap $12-$15 PCI wireless cards, until I had the opportunity to test a dual-band $34 PCIe wireless adapter. There was a night and day difference, with the better adapter providing near wired speeds, through a couple of walls and perhaps 18'-20'.

Yes being wired will give you a significant boost compared to Wi-Fi since there will be less interuptions and will have a higher memory speed, and will not have better ping and conectio n in software and games.

Indeed powerlines can be a good solution. Before buying one check the reviews of the product, flops are not uncommon. But just a cable remains better and cheaper :p.
