Are MSI boards just bad in general?

I've been researching all the parts to a build i'm hoping to build this summer, and I am willing to sacrifice a lot of performance for very high reliability, because the games I play aren't very intensive. I came across a website that has a spreadsheet of hundreds of motherboards that have been reported as faulty, dangerous, problematic etc. http://www.overclock.net/a/database-of-motherboard-vrm-failure-incidents and it seems to me that MSI motherboards are just cruddy, and have lots of problems with the vrm heatsinks. Should I stick with Asus and Gigabyte, and pay a premium for reliability?

Yes. Most definitely. There are boards even in the Asus and Gigabyte lineup that are junk. If it fits your budget and form factor + required features, the Asus Gryphon Z87 is a terrific board with incredible heat sinks and durability features, sacrificing a bit of the flash that the ROG boards have. The ROG boards have similar heatsinks along with very similar high quality components but at a much higher price point and often with features mainstream gamers don't need.

yes... buy reliability. there's nothing worse than when your motherboard goes, then you dont have a computer for a month while you try to RMA it.

or you have to buy a replacement mobo, then sell it used a month later for a loss.

I personally ONLY buy ASUS moteherboards... but people do tend to like gigabyte as well

I like Gigabyte and Asus, but I've been running a MSI motherboard for about 3 years ever since I've bought my 2500K. I've overclocked it etc and almost put this motherboard through hell and back; its definitely a trooper.

I wouldnt say they're bad boards. They are definitely going to serve their purpose.

That chart is interesting though, there are quite a few MSI's on there.

thanks guys, I dont have too much experience with many motherboards, I use a cheap biostar motherboard, and other cheap parts like a logisys psu, and I would normally never buy such cheap unreliable parts, but the website I used to build my own pc computerlx.com gave me a 3 year warranty, so im not too worried about hurting my system. I've heard that asus is the best brand, so I think I will go with them next time :)
