Ethernet Cable cutting out randomly??

Hi, My ethernet cable sometimes randomly cuts out and my gaming consoles says there isn't one connected. It was working fine when I first tested it a couple months back but then I got the builders to put it through the ceiling to my room. I should have covered the end but I forgot! I think it must have been damaged in some ways but when I look at the connectors they seem clean and in position when using a magnifying glass. It's weird, sometimes it will work for a few weeks and then randomly stop working and then I have to try taking it out and plugging it back in again. The cable was not cheap and cost me about £30. I'm having this issue on multiple consoles so it's definitely an issue with the cable. Any ideas?
I have also tried cleaning it with a Hoover but the problem seems to be getting worse (cutting out more frequently)
Thanks,
Ben

An ethernet cable should not cost you £30 - buy online, not in a store.

That being said, ethernet cables have been known to fail, and when they do, they go like that. Not sure how you tried cleaning it with a vacuum (though it's an amusing mental image) but from the sounds of it, you need a new cable.

If you have a PC, try testing the cable you have now in the PC and see if it has issues there too - most likely it will, but it might be the port on the console that's the issue. (I doubt it, though.)
