I built my own machine about 10 months ago. I have a small SSD which runs Windows and a few other things and then a traditional HD (Western Digital 1TB). Today after I woke my computer up, it had a message that AVG had downloaded an update and the computer needed to reboot. After clicking ok, the computer started making a wierd noise and it had a lot of trouble shutting down. I've managed to pull the computer back up but I can't seem to access the traditional HD. The HD light is on almost constantly and when I pull up task manager it shows my traditional HD running at 100%. Any suggestions on what to do?

I ran Western Digital's utility for about 9 hours last night. According to the progress bar, it was only about 25% done and I got frustrated and hit cancel. At that point, it popped up with a message that said bad sectors had been found and did I want to fix them. I clicked yes and now things appear to be working again. I didn't have any time to see if there were any other lingering problems but fingers crossed I'm back in business again.

Hi,

Did you give sometime for the HDD to be accessible since I doubt that possibly your AVG is doing a realtime scan on that drive. You can try to disable your AV protection and see if you will be able to access that drive with no problem.

It took a while but I was finally able to uninstall AVG. Still no dice on the HDD. The computer seems to still recognize it but I guess it's so busy doing whatever it's doing that I can't get it to do anything else. Trying to run chkdsk but it is taking forever. I guess I will try to download Western Digital's diagnostic tool and see if I can run it.
