Laptop not detecting SSD in external USB enclosure? Help!

Okay. I bought a new Kingston 120GB 2.5 inch SSD to upgrade the HDD in my Fujitsu Lifebook T5010. I want to clone the existing drive to the new drive. I am using a USB connect external enclosure. But when I plug it into my lifebook, nothing happens. I mean nothing at all. I have tried it with my wife's Lenovo Idealpad and with my son's HP Elitebook and I get the same thing. The funny thing is that when I plugged it into my regular desktop, it loaded right up and works fine. Using my desktop, initialized the drive and everything, but none of the laptops will even detect it when it is plugged into them. All systems are running windows 7. What the heck is wrong?

  1. Hi,

It is possible that the external USB enclosure that your are using is not compatible for the laptop's USB port . Thus, it is not able to get enough power for the drive to be operationally stable from the laptop's USB port.

My external enclosure has AC power.
  3. Are you using a USB 3.0 enclosure?

No. It is a USB 2.0 docking station.
  5. Sorry for the late response. You may try running this tool on your laptop while the docking station is plugged. http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems

Thanks for the reply. I already accomplished my goal by taking the HDD out and putting it in the docking station and installing the SSD in the laptop and then using an EaseUs Todo live CD to clone the OS from HDD to the SSD. Worked like a charm an was easy and strait forward to do. Not sure why the laptop could see the SSD when it was installed internally and not when it was in the USB docking station. That is a problem for another day.
