Howdy all,

With all the glut of old mining cards being dumped out in the secondary market. Would it be worth it to sell my GTX 670 DCT ASUS card and pick up a R9 290 or even a R9280X as a minor upgrade? Not sure if my 670's worth in comparison to faster cards right now. Any thoughts? Thanks all.

The only thing worth upgrading to is a GTX 780 Ti or R9-290X. Otherwise, you can connect another GTX 670 for SLI.

The 280X and 670 are pretty similar in most cases, I'm not sure it's worth switching out for any kind of cash.

Though the 290 and 290x's are a pretty decent upgrade I think I would have to find a sweet deal to replace the 670. Video cards haven't been taking all that many huge leaps forward recently, it seems to be the same old releases just being rebranded and shoved out the door again. I'd almost just wat on it until the next round of video cards and see if something more obvious as a worth while upgrade appears... in fact, that's just what I've been doing with my 670. It sucks that the good maxwell stuff is being delayed though.

I wish I could but AMD 990FX motherboards don't work with SLI as long as I can remember. R9's 290's going below $300 are so tempting. Maxwell on 28nm is coming out this year though right?

The R9 280X isn't really enough of an improvement to justify the outlay.
Moving up to an R9 290X is a fairly significant jump up: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/gaming-graphics-card-revi... and would be worth it if you can find one at a sensible price.

Remember, the R9 290X has an awful reference cooler, and most people know it so prices should be low enough to budget for a replacement cooler to avoid premature deafness or complaints about the noise...From neighbours.
Toms has an article on using the Arctic Accelero to solve the R9 290X heating problems: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/r9-290-accelero-xtreme-29... if the big Arctic is too expensive the little Gelid Icy Vision (check compatibility!) is a capable cooler at a good price. In both cases make sure either will fit in your system case!
Frankly though you have a good, strong build, unless there's a serious frame rate issue (which I doubt) I think you'll be better off waiting for Maxwell, or at least, until it does start to show some more serious limitations in future games.
