Fresh Windows 7 Install, random white/blue screen

I just installed a fresh copy of windows 7 64 bit onto a dell optiplex 745 mini tower which according to dell is 64 bit compatible though came stock with windows xp 32 bit.

I got the first blue screen (just a plain blue screen not the bsod with an error message) when it came time to give the pc a name and all that stuff, after a restart it continued normally and finished installing. from that point on, it has given me a white or blue screen literally randomly, it doesn't matter if i'm just going through windows explorer or browsing the internet. it just happens.

I already updated the graphics drivers and it didn't stop the issue. I was in the middle of installing updates when it happened again, sadly windows undid all the updates since it thought i had cancelled them.

Has this happened to anyone else, is it a 64 bit issue even though it is supposedly a 64 bit system?

Right now it has 3 gb, and it's the mini tower so the specs say it can handle up to 8.

I'm going to have to try installing the updates again on sunday (it's my mother's computer and I don't live at home).

Though my concern is it's not a typical blue screen, y'know the one that comes with all the error messages, it's just a blank light blue, or sometimes white, or sometimes flashing blue. I'm hoping you're right about the updates but like i said that's going to have to wait.

I was just hoping that someone has had this problem before and has more or less an idea of the problem.

Just to clarify though I know no one has said it. The drive was formatted first then had the os installed.

the screens you are describing point to a graphics issue.are you running on the integrated graphics or does it have a graphics card installed?it could very well be a graphics driver problem.i would try installing all the windows updates and update all drivers.being as this is a vista machine, let win7 install its drivers.if you want to check a piece of hardware to see if it has the latest driver go to control panel>device manager and right click on your graphics card and select update driver.also look for the old exclamation mark beside any of your hardware.if found find out the error codes.dont feel overwhelmed here, just take one step at a time.

The graphics driver was the first thing i let windows install, i did not do it manually, after that though no other drivers stood out on the windows update, just generic update for windows 7 security blah blah blah.

Also the computer boots up just fine, this happens when i'm already in windows using normally.

I did just read though about having to use vista 64 bit drivers, i'm going to dl them to my flash drive and install them on sunday so i'll have to wait 'til then to see if they work.

Thank you all for the replies.
