OS: Windows 7
Motherboard: AsRock 970 extreme3
CPU: AMD Phenom II 965
GPU: GeForce GTX 550 ti
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8 GB
PSU: BFGTech 450w (Model: BFGR450WGSPSU)

Recently my PC has been resetting and booting back just fine, or it resets and fails to boot, my mobo speaker goes off, giving me five beeps. I originally believed it was a problem with my motherboard because it is junk, but now I feel like it could be my PSU but I don't know how to pinpoint my problem to know what I should replace. This only happens when gaming, my temperatures are never high (mobo 35c, GPU 60c, CPU 45c max) and I don't play games that are very intensive. However, when I am maxing out a game/putting more stress on hardware, it tends to reset / fail to boot more often. I contacted Asrock and they said five beeps is a VGA error. My video card seems fine and I've used it in another PC.

The reason I believe it could be my PSU is because when the problem occurs, if I go near my PSU on my tower, it does have a smell of hot plastic/rubber. The smell is worse on occasions when it gives five beeps and fails to boots, less when it resets and boots fine. This problem only started after I cleaned out my PC, nothing went wrong during the process, I just used compressed air like normal. I've reset my BIOS settings, upgraded my BIOS, reseated all hardware components and thoroughly cleaned everything. I also ran a memory test and it came back with no errors.

I don't know how to pinpoint the problem, my mobo is crap indeed and faulty since I got it but my PSU smelling this way leads me to believe it is the problem. I am not sure what needs replaced if anything does at all. I have never had this happen while my PC is idle or during general use/non gaming. Are these signs of a failing power supply or something else?

I built the system in 2013, however, the PSU is from 2010. If I remember correctly, the five beeps were just five straight beeps, fairly fast. I contacted AsRock about it, they linked me a webpage stating the 5 beeps for my model meant VGA error. Also, as I said, it does not always result in five beeps, sometimes it will simply reset and boot.

I have thoroughly cleaned it. I just want to be sure it's a problem with the power supply before definitely replacing anything.
