Hi all!

I'm planning to build a new gaming rig and I can't decide between two GPUs. They are exactly:

1. Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X
2. Gigabyte GTX 780 Windforce 3x OC

The other parts:

mobo: Asus Z87-A
memory: Kingston 2x4GB DDR3 1866MHz Beast
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K
PSU: Chieftec Smart 600W GPS-600A8
HDD: SEAGATE 1TB Barracuda 7200.14 7200rpm 64MB SATA3

I've heard advantages and disadvatages both of them. Is it true that about half of the most recent games runs better with r9 290, and the other half prefers gtx 780? And are Mantle and Nvidia Physx imoprtant in this situation? Oh and the Gigabyte cards are told to has shorter life expectancy than the Sapphire cards, but Gigabyte gives 3 years warranty, and Sapphire provides only 2.

So, if You were me, which card would be your choice? Thx for the answers!
(and sorry for my English, if i've made mistakes in grammar :)

I would go for Tri-X card just because it's Sapphire which is like EVGA for AMD :D
Yes it's true that some games run better on 780 and some runs better on 290
Finally it's true about Gigabytes short life.

And what about overclocking? Which card is more capable for that? Because I dont want to change my card for at least 5 years! Oh, and thx for the quick answer anyway! :)

No worries! Sapphire OC's very well so generally R9 290 is better because of 4GB VRAM, future games might require 4GB VRAM for 1080p

Edit: R9 290 (with decent cooler that Sapphire has) OC's to R9 290X's performance and R9 290X is a Titan killer as you know :D

Here is one guy with Sapphire Tri-X :)  http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1990963/290-refe...

Great, thx! One last thing: will it be fine with an Intel CPU? Sorry for my annoying questions, but I'm not an expert, and want to bu sure about this config. :)

You need a 750W PSU to run the r9 290! Don't make the same mistake i did..
Also i was currently on the same boat as you were and deciding between the two cards, can any1 post some pros and cons? Would be appreciated. Thanks.

I did some research and the Sapphire card doesn't consume more than 336 W. So compaired with an Intel CPU which also consumes less power than AMD CPUs (if I'm not mistaken) than a 600 W chieftec PSU (which is a great brand imo) should be enough. But correct me if I'm wrong :)

No worries! The best CPU to go with R9 290 is Intel core i5 or i7 CPU, your 4670k is the best gaming CPU on the market (best price/performance ratio :) ) Also 650W is recommended PSU but you'll be fine with quality good 600W

Edit: Feel free to ask, I will answer to all your questions as best as
I can :)

You need a 750W PSU MINIMUM, as indicated on the product page, it's also on the packaging details. I've already contacted support and that was their answer to my problem, i keep getting black screens and hopefully when i exchange it tomorrow it will be fixed.

Total system would eat about 400W http://anandtech.com/show/7481/the-amd-radeon-r9-290-re...
And recommended PSU for R9 290 is 650W http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm

Dude. I am currently running 2x770GTX but fancy upgrading to 2 of the Sapphire R9-290 TRIX. In January my 7990HD died. I wanted 2x780GTX but they were too expensive. I decided to go for 2x770GTX in the interim (Zotac - 5 years warranty). I have been waiting 5 months for 780GTX prices to come down, but they wont. The cheapest decent one is Zotac 780GTX at £340. A few days ago, I came across the Sapphire R9-290 TRIX at Amazon for £280 (equal to 780GTX but £60 cheaper). I went for it and bought two.

However, one of them turned out to be faulty (defective Hynix RAM). The other is working okay but see the following link for review and comments that the Sapphire brand has got a lot of problems with the VRAM (even with the Hynix brand which is far better than the crap Elpida brand). I am concerned now. Anyway, see -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R36TBVDMGINTS/ref=cm_cr_...

BTW, does anyone know how to CrossfireX a pair of R9-290's?. I have Asus Crosshair V Formula Z motherboard.
