Hi,
Recently i bought a Western Digital 4tb harddrive and i put it into a disk enclosure. I was planning to use it as an external drive. After i connected it through usb port to my computer, windows recognized it as two seperate harddrives. Is it possible that i can use my external 4 tb harddrive as single instead of 2 and 1.63 tb harddrives?

Thanks

Solution
Before doing Clean and Create Partition Primary options in diskpart utility , i was able to see it in Windows disk management as two different drives. But after that operation, i can not see it anymore. Also i began to hear noises from harddrive. I decided to send it back to company, where i bought it from. Also sending the disk enclosure. If disk is not physically damaged, maybe then can help rebuilding its boot records and they can install it as single drive while it is inside enclosure. Thanks all of you for help.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. In fact i formatted my disk using GBT as it says above and i do not have any problem about its capacity. Windows is already recognizing my disk as totally 3.63 tb but the problem is , it is dividing my disk into two seperate harddrives, but i want to use it as single 3.63 drive assigned a single drive letter by Windows. I did not understand why windows divided it into two seperate drives.

Well, one thing could be the version of Windows you're running it under (you didn't specify).

You could plug in the drive and see if you can correct it via DISKPART (assuming win7)

Open up a command box.
Start button -> type in the box 'diskpart' (will pull up a list of matches) right click on 'diskpart.exe' and hit 'run as administrator'.
This opens up the diskpart utility, now type in:

>list disk
(lists the disks available, starting with disk 0 as probably the main drive), I'm going to assume you have the one main disk, and the USB disk as 'probably' disk 1. It will list the disk and the size (along with some other info) in a table so use the correct number!!!
>select disk 1
selects the usb disk. again, make sure you select the correct disk!!! If your usb disk is listed as 2 or 3, use select disk 2 or select disk 3.
>clean
(wipes all partition information on the disk) using the wrong disk could blast your boot drive so VERIFY YOU'RE PLAYING WITH THE RIGHT ONE.
>create partition primary
(creates a primary partition, no size specified means use the whole thing and should default to a gpt partition)
>assign
(assigns a drive letter, and will probably launch the box with the windows format drive warning about how you need to format it to use it.
>exit
(exits diskpart)

Sorry forgot to mention my windows version. I am using windows 7 home premium 64 bits. I followed the steps as you wrote down. It was disk 1 and disk 2 on the list. I selected disk 1, then clean and then create partition primary. It took a while and then it gave an error during the create partition process. And now i can not see my disk on the list. Both 1 and 2 are gone. Also i hear strange and continuous sound from my disk at the moment. I scanned my computer for new hardware changes, but it can not recognize my disk also. Do you have any idea how to bring it back? I hope this continuous sound i hear is not a mechanical error in the disk :(
