Asrock z77 extreme4 vs Samsung surround sound. Round one.....

Ok, so I bought a samsung surround sound system for playing games/watching movies and once I had set it all up and plugged the optical cable from the pc to the receiver I only get the front speakers working. I can't get any sound from the sub or the rear speakers...

I tried reinstalling the audio drivers but that doesn't seem to make any difference. I cannot select configure in the sound options on realtek digital output or when I try to select 5.1 there are only 2.1 options?

my board says it supports up to 7.1 surround sound, I tried buying dolby digital live even to see if that would help only to have it tell me that it isn't supported for my hardware.. I am running out of ideas..

do I need to buy a soundcard? is there a solution that I am missing? any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Liam

  1. Hi Liam,

As I've got it in for Realtek at the moment I can offer you the next best thing to the 100% perfect solution you're looking for.
Try uninstalling the Realtek audio drivers and software and configure the sound setup through Windows Sounds manager to handle the running of your audio.

There will almost certainly be two outcomes:
    1) Your sound will work as required, in which case you will have confirmation that the hardware setup is all good and that the Realtek drivers/software is responsible for causing you grief.
    2) Your sound will not work as required, in which case... You probably can't eliminate a hardware issue and you'll not be able to pin the problem on Realtek as being the culprit (although you needn't rule them out!)

If nothing else, my experience tells me that this is a good place to start.

    In Windows 7:

    Click the following:

Start Button >> Control Panel (right hand side) >> View by Large Icons >> Sound

This should fire up the sound manager: Left click on Speakers (should indicate that they're running okay with a green tick) >> Left click on [Configure] >> Follow the speaker set up instructions.

Also get back to the sound manager 'home' screen >> Left click on Speakers >> Left click on [Properties] and work your way through each of the tabs to make sure that nothing silly is checked or selected.
  3. Thanks, I will try that. Where is the windows sound manager though? I searched in the windows taskbar but nothing came up, I tried to find that software to download but couldn't

update: I am using windows 7 btw
  4. when I uninstalled the realtek driver they all disappeared though.
  5. only nvidia hdmi ports, my monitor speakers and my tv show up now
  6. Hmmm... Wasn't expecting that! - Once the Realtek drivers were uninstalled I was expecting the Windows generic drivers to take over. I know for a fact that this is supposed to happen since I did this on mine only yesterday and am still using those generic drivers.

Check device manager: (right click My Computer >> left click Properties >> Select Device Manager) confirm that there is a High Definition Audio Device present under Sound, video and game controller devices. Check to see if there are any yellow exclamation marks attached to any of your sound items.
  7. sorry for not replying, I was checking everything one by one...

so I found out that my Motherboard doesn't support Dolby Digital or DTS

I bought a external sound card that supported both

After installing and updating drivers it still wasn't working

Tried so many different things in the sound settings and occasionally it would work but then it wouldn't and I had no idea why

Almost giving up I tried my ps3 as well to determine if it was the sound card not sending the correct bitstream or the surround sound not decoding it

Turns out the ps3 didn't work either and it was the surround sound

    SO

if ANYONE that isn't as computer savvy as myself comes across this post and is having similar issues to me then the problem IS

Asrock z77 Extreme4 no dolby or dts support

Soundblaster X-fi 5.1 Surround Pro is brilliant but no dolby digital live connect support

    AND THE REAL KICKER

The Samsung HT-F4550 NEEDS a dolby dvd in it so it can have the dolby bitstream option for audio decoding in the menu...obviously can't check that when your using your tv as your monitor haha

There is probably a better way in the developers menu to unlock the dolby bitstream permanently but I am happy with Shrek always in there for a laugh.
