A friend of mine handed me a HDD out of a laptop and told me its dead. He asked me if I could find a way to get the files off it.
I tried to run it off my laptop but my bios is not seeing it (the same problem he told me he was having) He is not much interested in saving the drive. He just wants what is on it.
Is there a way of doing this?

If it is not showing in bios it is beyond repair. A specialist data recovery company may be able to help but it won't be cheap.

You can see if a computer store near you does a data recovery service. However doing so does not mean that they will be able to recover the data, depending on how damaged the hard drive is. Even so, if they are able to recover the data, it will most likely be very costly.

Quite often they have to remount the platters in another ok drive. This is a surgical type procedure.

The only real option is to connect to a PC and see if it still works well enough to recover data, though I had a "barely" functional drive and tried SEVEN different programs and only one from EASEUS worked.

Data recovery costs thousands of dollars if they have to work with a dead drive. For example: http://www.harddriverecovery.org/pricing.html

"Every data recovery situation is different: some require only low cost software to do the job. Meanwhile, some jobs require clean room hard drive repair. As a result, your data recovery could cost anywhere from $49 to $2500."

It's not exactly a range, more like $49 to buy a piece of software that only works if the HDD is still functional, but $2500 for them to recover the data if the drive is dead.
