I have an ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0, which is AM3+. it says AMD crossfire x on the box. However I bought an ASUS GTX 760, which I assume can be used with an SLI bridge. Is it possible to use SLI between 2 760's on this motherboard.

nope, the second port is 4x only. for sli you need 2x 16x ports or 2x 8x ports. (same story as the H87 boards)

Infact, I just checked the motherboard itself and it says PCIEX16 on both of the slots, its just that ones black and ones blue. does this mean SLI would actually work then?

Expansion Slots
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (blue)
1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, black)

no. the problem is the second one is just x4 but wired as x16. crossfire is ok with this sli isn't. (same as H87 boards)
