Previously my system had an ASUS M4A79XTD EVO motherboard with two Radeon HD 6450 video cards. I have two so I can have additional monitors and they allow me to output HD audio via hdmi to my htpc. Recently my computer got damaged and my motherboard died. I purchased a Asus M5A97 R2.0 motherboard. Most things seem to work just fine. I had to do a clean install of windows 7. In the device manager, there are two cards and they are enabled. In the Catalyst software, one card is enabled and the other is disabled with no option to enable it. Could this motherboard not support running two video cards independently? Is it only able to run in Crossfire mode? I have contacted Asus tech support but they don't seem to understand what I am saying. Please help. Thanks.

Hi,
1) Try both cards one at a time in the TOP slot to verify they work, then
2) Try a card in the SECOND x16 slot by itself.

All motherboards support independent graphics cards. It's actually a function of Windows + drivers that is the critical part and that works.

The ONLY reasons I can currently come up with are:
a) graphics card defective, or
b) graphics card SLOT defective

Other:
- Main chipset driver from motherboard support site
- latest AMD driver from main site (not just what Windows installs)

do you have the latest BIOS for the motherboard? also install all the latest chipset drivers.

your answer might come from the radeon software suite... i know nvidia control panel comes with SLI = disabled.. you have to turn it on manually

Update:

Is it possible you are running in CROSSFIRE mode already?

If so, disable that. There are definitely people having issues with driver installation order. The proper order usually is the CHIPSET first, AMD video (CCC) software second. So if you didn't do it that way you could uninstall them both and reinstall in the correct order.
