Hi guys I recently ordered all the parts for a new build and they're already starting to come in but I just realized I don't have any antivirus. Is it necessary to get one?

If you are going to run Windows then yes.

You can use a free program, like Microsoft Security Essentials or AVG (the free version). Just keep in mind that the free antivirus programs are usually not as good as paid ones. But it is a really good idea to have one, just having a free version or MSE will help ALOT.

Just get a free one, the paid ones are almost the exact same thing they just come with different and more complete scans and what not. If it comes to that there are free malware scanners you can get. I would say that all antivirus programs only have about a 40% success rate at doing there job.

MCAfee sucks, get a free one such as avira, etc.

Well everybody seems to have different opinions... :(  and I'm gonna be running Windows 8.1
What if I get a free one like suggested and then just try to stay off of bad websites?
And if I would pay for one it would have to be a cheap one. Any recommendations?

The free ones are more than fine, they also have the plus side of not bogging your system down anywhere near as much as the paid ones like McAfee or Symantec.

If you have the firewall turned on, an anti-virus software program running (& set to either automatically scan once a week or at least prompt you to run the scan), have MalwareBytes as a backup (can clean out just about anything that gets past the anti-virus, paid or free), then you'll be safe from about 90% of the stuff out there. Now, if you're going to "unsafe" pages, or downloading files from unknown sources...well, just be super careful...
