Which CPU should I get?

I have an Asus P5N32-E SLI Mobo, with a LGA775 socket. It's old and therefore limited in choice of CPU. I'm thinking that maybe a Core 2 Extreme QX6850 will be about as good as I can get for it, but I don't know enough about these matters to be sure. So, what do you think? All constructive ideas welcome. :)

If you were generally satisfied with the performance of your system, before it decided to commit suicide, then you could go with this. It would still be an upgrade over your old system, without going crazy on price.

First of all, you really need to tell us your budget, requirements, usage and possible the hardware in the rest of your system to avoid bottlenecking and make sure that everything works well together.

Sorry, didn't think about that. I've got an Nvidia GTX295 twin chip GPU, 5Gb RAM and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OS. It had an Intel core 2 Extreme QX6800 fitted, which was working fine since it was built ,about 2007 I think. When I checked the Mobo supported chips table, the small increase to the QX6850 seemed a good option. As for budget, well, I'd like to get a good deal and I don't want to spend too much, as I'm thinking to upgrade the GPU to a GTX660 to get DX11 specifically, but to improve my system generally anyway. However, as it's a pretty old setup, I want to make it as good as I can before I eventually have to invest in a modern Mobo to take contemporary components.

Sorry loga, but I don't understand that. Just to clarify, the old QX6800 is busted so I have to get a new CPU.

Quite sure. Firstly, I changed the Mobo (had a spare copy) and it lights up anyway. Secondly, my old PC that I'm having to use at present, has an LGA775 socket, so I put the QX6800 in it, and got the same result, ie, everything powered up, fans, lights etc but no signal to the monitor.

You may be right logainofhades. I've tried my old Intel Celeron 440 2.0GHz CPU in both the Asus P5N32-E's, with no joy, and with further research, it seems that my old Foxconn 45CM Mobo won't support the X6800 CPU anyway, so I don't know it's definitely bust. Of course, I can't be sure that the P5N32-E's can recognise the Celeron chip either, but my suspicions are that the spare Mobo was broken anyway, and that the fitted working one has packed up. Now I'm thinking to get a newer Mobo, but that's a bit of a nightmare coz if I want to advance then I should get a contemporary Mobo, but I doubt it would take my old CPU and possibly GPU too. In which case, maybe I should just look to buy as modern a gameing PC as I can afford, coz I'm not sure that buying all new components will be any cheaper.
