Hi there,

I just bought a second LCD monitor (ASUS 24") with the intention of connecting it up to my PC via it's DVI-D port, but it's having different ideas...

Firstly, My 64bit Windows 7 PC has an Nvidia GTX 670, which has both a DVI-I port and a DVI-D port.

I have 2 DVI cables, one DVI-D single link, the other a DVI-D dual link cable, these are the ones I'm trying to use.

I have been using my first LCD monitor (LG 22") happily with the (singular) DVI-D dual link cable into the DVI-I port of the 670 for several years now without issue. However, when I tried to connect my new monitor up to the empty DVI-D port with the supplied DVI-D (single link) cable, the new monitor just said "NO SIGNAL" and proceeded to go to sleep... not what I had in mind...

After various fiddling and such I can say the following about mixing and matching the DVI cables and whatnot...

    - The first monitor will work when connected by either DVI cable to either DVI port.
    - The second monitor will not be detected by anything unless it is connected to the DVI-I port, and even then it is merely on the windows screen resolution interface saying 'another display not detected', which gives the option to connect anyway via VGA... which understandably does nothing.
    - If I restart the PC with only the new monitor connected, it will appear to work, up to the 'Starting windows' screen, after which it just goes to a black screen... and then goes to sleep...
    - If I start my PC in safe mode with only the new monitor attached, it seems to function correctly, suggesting a driver issue...
    - After fully wiping and reinstalling my display drivers, all of the above remains true.

Lastly, I pull out the VGA cable supplied with the monitor, and attach it to the new monitor via a DVI/VGA adaptor to the 670's DVI-I port... this immediately works as expected...

So what I would like to ask... is;

Does anyone have any idea what is going on with my DVI connections, and how to possibly connect the two screens via two DVI cables?

Or is it not even worth it, considering the VGA method seems to work (I do intend to play games on the first and second monitor at alternate times, would this matter?)

I can provide any further information if you are interested in helping, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

UPDATE: After turning my computer back on again today... only the second monitor coming through VGA is working now... so now I have no working DVI connections apparantly...

I think I may have come up with a cause to this issue, and it may be down to the DVI-D (dual link cable).

When I turned the PC back on again, the VGA was yet again the only one displaying an image (this was a system resume after hibernation).

I tried resetting the PC multiple times (using the reset button) and the DVI display would just not show - this was using the DVI-D (dual link cable) [The only workaround from there so far was to log in anyway (even though I couldn't see the login screen) and right click on the screen I could see, and set the displays to mirrored, and then do a full reset of the pc with only the DVI-D cable plugged in - which then allowed me to plug in the VGA cable again, letting me see both monitors.]

However, today before doing a full reset... whilst it was only showing on the VGA screen, I switched the DVI-D (dual link) cable with the DVI-D (single link) cable, and miraculously the screen came back to life...

So, this leads me to believe that somehow using a DVI-D (dual link) cable for a dual monitor setup, rather than an actual dual link DVI to one monitor, somehow confuses and trips up the computer.

I am going to try and buy another DVI-D (single link cable) and try swapping out the VGA connected screen with that, and will post back if that is a fix to my issues...

fingers crossed! :)

Alas... a second DVI-D (single link) cable did not solve this issue, it merely did the same as the DVI-D (Dual link) cable - which is unfortunately, bugger all.

Also of note... when it is 'working' via VGA the native 1920x1080 only uses part of the screen... though switching to the apparently available resolution of 1920x1200 uses the whole screen but is squashed...

I'm now at a loss as to what to do next... buy a second dual link cable and try that? return the new monitor (and hope that the next doesn't do the same)? or some other avenue beyond my perception, any suggestions would be very welcome.

For what it is worth, here is my full PC spec. Perhaps it will shed some light on the issue to someone more knowledgeable than myself...

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
CPU: Intel i5 3570K @3.40GHz
RAM: 16GB DDR3 (Corsair)
GPU: NVidia GTX 670 2GB (MSI)
SSD: 256GB (OCZ)
HDD: 2TB (Seagate)
PSU: 600W (Coolermaster)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Display 1: 22" LG M227WD
Display 2: 23.6" ASUS VE247H (<the one having issues>)

Like I say, if anyone could shed any light on this, or wants to help, I would be very grateful for the assistance!

I am having as similar problem. I bought as DVI-D adapter (not cable) and tried to connect my ACER monitor as a second monitor. The male adapter fits the DVI-D port (so I know that I have teh corect adapter, already bought one incorrect DVI adapter), the female VGA from my monitor fits correctly. I am getting "cable not connected" from my secondary monitor. I tried to resart.

I am running Windows 8

Thanks- Maybe I'll try restarting again.....
