My first one was $285 retail (discounted). It would play every cutting edge game for that platform at the time.

Spoiler
Of course, it was a Commodore C-64 from the mid-80's.

A gaming rig can range anywhere from $500 on up to a few thousand. Are you looking to build a computer? Do you have games you want to play on an expected setting with smooth graphics?

Funny!
I thought it'd be more expensive than that though.

Initially, I think they were $600. By the time I got around to it, it was much cheaper. I still have it and it still works.
If I were sufficiently motivated, I'd go find it, in the original box, with the original sticker on it.

Do you use your BD writer much? Here it costs almost 5x a DVD writer and I was wondering if it was worth the price.
