Hello,

this could sound like a regular memory issue, but i think it goes a bit deeper :)

I have this Corsair Kit CMZ32GX3M4X1600C10, which is 4x8G dimms.
I used them for a flawlessly year without any problems on my ASUS P8Z77-V mobo, right?

Two days ago, my PC just didnt boot up. Motherboard memory led is red so, something is wrong with memory... long story short?

One Dimm out of three are working. I seat each DIMM, one at a time on A2 slot; and only one works, the other 3 doesnt even Post (Asus Mem OK doesnt help) :)

So... you say.. the memory got F$%^ up, right!? i tried those on a different Motherboard and they work just fine :(

I tried forcing the frequency and CAS on them (by using the good dimm ), but it just doenst work.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! :)

Solution
first of all try clearing cmos.(hardware reset)(since you have been messing with bios setting ram timings or even o/c) and since the ram sticks are operetional on other mobo then they should on yours.then install them as pairs. on 1-3 slot first and then 2-4 and lastly try enabling xmp.

@Ahnilated, im suspecting a bad memory controller :(
@Chris987, i tried the clearing cmos (god, sometimes one forgets the most basic things..).

Well, here is the outcome:
1) I seated 2 dimms on slots 2/4 (instead of 1-3) since ASUS mobo recommends placing as 2, 2/4 and 1/2/3/4 (in that order).
2) cleared cmos and restarted.
3) it posted, i checked BIOS and both memory info came out with the right freq, cas, etc (according to memory default specs).
4) i got all exited and placed the other 2 rams.
5) did not posted :(
6) removed the two additionally rams and did not posted either :( (here is just became weird)

i tried to repeat the cmos clearing after but no luck really. I could not reproduced the good post :(

Now, here is something i just find out while doing all tests...

When i put the good dimm, it post to bios, right!?, so i put a second and nothing happens. Just red led memory on the motherboard (same as before).
here is the thing... when i removed the "faulty" dimm, i tried to post with the "good" dimm and i've got a post message "Overclocking failed. Enter setup bla bla".
Which makes me think the Mother was trying to optimize the new ram and got just "stuck" while doing it (reason it doesnt post).

Now, i tried to disabled everything on BIOS which could give me an indication that could OC. (im not a BIOS expert).
Does anyone knows the AMI bios to know what features should be off to override the OC?

Or, any other ideas?

i suspect not an succesful cmos clearing. all should be set at defauld state.make sure you do the procedure correctly. refer to your mobo manual for best result.(with power off and psu off ,if your mobo has two pin remove jumper for several seconds.if it has three sort-circuit the other two with jumper again for several seconds.)additionally you could load optimal default profile. you should have that option.also refer to manual for led light explenation or beep paterns.make sure your psu is in good condition and try reading voltages through bios, if you can manage a successful post

Hi Chris987,

Sorry i wasnt clear before, the cmos clearing does work since all settings goes nuts/default :)
Problem is... it only works when i have the "good" dimm on the motherboard. If i add a second dimm, it just doesnt post and the red dimm light is ON (motherboard manual says that memory has some problems... duh!) :) :)

When the "overclocking failure" message happens, is when i boot with the good dimm, shutdown, put the other one, turn on, no post, shutdown, remove the bad one, restars...

Since Dimms works on my other motherboard (old one), i would like to think on of two outcomes:
1) BIOS is trying to "read" or optimize the memory without luck (i guess the 4 dimms are not as EXACT as i though)
2) the Mother controller is not working fine :(

Ill check on the optimized settings, i think i tried already, but i cant be sure with so many backs and forwards :)

I appreciate your time in answering! :)

Ok, some more info...

1) I went to the BIOS with the good one and load optimized values.
2) shutdown, put another dimm
3) turn on AND IT DID POST.
4) Boot into windows and crashed
5) reset and no posting again.

What do you say at this point? change motherboard? :)

well, memory controller exists inside cpu, not mobo for several gereration intel chipsets.have you tried to read voltages.also do you have stock cooler? from bios also check cpu temps.since you have another pc try another psu on your not posting/booting and lastly try upgrading your bios. what are your full specs?also remove all sticks and inspect mobo ram slot pins.

Specs:

-ASUS P8Z77-V
-Corsair Kit CMZ32GX3M4X1600C10
-i5 3350p
-Radeon HD 5850

I do use stock cooler and it goes around 30-35c (right now is 30c).
Voltage for CPU and RAM are inside parameters (when i say RAM, its the dimm that posts) :)

The ram slots are fine, but since the slot A2 works flawlessly with the "good" ram and it doesnt with any other of the 3. That rule out problems with the slots; its good for one ram but not good enough for the other ones.

BIOS has the latest BIOS.

I really appreciate all the suggestions, dont give up on me :)

Sorry the late answer, i was gathering hardware, testing, etc

so... long story short, memory is broken. Contrary to what i said at the beginning. :(

So, i took the memory on this other old motherboard i had to know what exactly it was detecting (what frequency, cas, etc..).
I find out that the post says the amount of memory but when i try to get more info or even running a memtest86+, two out of the four failed miserably.

And this just change the "rules of the game". If two out of four are broken; that would explain why is not working on the original computer.
Now, the rest of 2 dimms, memtest86+ ran flawlessly for about 4hrs (full test i would say its 12-24h for my particular case, to be sure).

Anyways... i took the memory and run up to a friends house which has the "same" motherboard as me, its a ASUS P8Z77-V LE (mine doenst have the LE).
In that motherboard, the two good dimms, works as a charm (meaning, post and load windows and i even played Diablo 3 for about an hour :)
I doesnt say anything as a good memtest86, but i could say it was reading correctly the memory :)

Now, going back to my place, the original ASUS P8Z77-V i own, still doesnt ready the extra good dimm. but at this point; i dont know if i should blame the motherboard.

As for the PSU, i have an Antec TruePower 650 and my old computer has an Enermax 485w. As for voltages, i do see 12/5/3.3 +- 0.5 (give or take, cant remember exactly but its something of the sort) :) I tried both PSU on my computer to rule out issues with the Antec.

Anyways, the 2 out of 4 dimms are kaput, so im filling a Corsair RMA; wish me luck! :)

And btw, thanks for all the help!

your psu is a good one, so we must wait for the new ones to come...good luck!:)
