I'm really stumped here!

I purchased an LGA2011 Xeon E5-2620 CPU for $140, so really cheap and was going to use it, but I have an LGA1155 mothboard atm. Well, when I searched for a new processor, I just went by Sandbridge. Not thinking of server sockets. Well, impulse buy it was, lol. Anyhow, I use an xeon x3440 now for gaming. So yes, I only game and that is it. So I already have an Dell xps 8100 in which is upgraded to x3440, 16gb mem, SSD, Radeon R9 280x. I have an LGA1155 motherboard to upgrade the xps 8100's board with. So is why I bought the processor.

My question is, should I just buy a LGA2011 motherboard for this processor?

Or can upgrade my R9 280x to R9 290 for $80 bucks since the place I bought the 280x from will upgrade me because of fan issues on the 280x? Enough of diff from 280x to 290 for $80

Or get a LGA1155 processor like an 2500k?

I'm stumped because of the processor only being 2.0ghz boosts to 2.5 to other 3ghz. 3.5ghz boost, but yet still good ratings on the 2.0ghz. 2 times of that of the x3440. Shown here,

Thanks for all your help guys!!

What model is that 1155 mobo? If it's a 7 series chipset it supports Ivy Bridge, and a 6 series chipset also supports IB though it may need a BIOS update to do so.

You can use an Ivy Bridge i5-3570 or 3570K. The 2620 will win certain applications because it has more cores but it depends on the application support for multi-core operation. For ordinary desktop use, many programs still like fast single cores.

Was looking for cheap upgrade, but It's Intel DP67DE to upgrade the xps 8100 motherboard. But I don't think I'm going that route any longer. Rather just build whole new system and sell XPS 8100 complete. I bought it last year for a good price and sold my custom built. If I had the Xeon E5 1620, 3.5ghz, I'd be getting the motherboard. But 2.0ghz, it's lower then what I have now but yet shows x2 the benchmark in passmark is what confused me!
