What is the point of a SATA cable to your optical drive?

I have my optical drive wired into my PSU but I don't have the sata cable in the optical drive, to the Mobo. Will this create a problem? It opens up just fine, what is the sata cable used for if it opens and closes without it? Sorry if i sound like an idiot.

The sata cable carries ALL the digital information back and forth between the system and the optical drive. The power cable just makes the hardware work.

the PSU connection only powers up the hardware... so the optical drive will open and close.. and that's about all it will do if you don't connect it with a SATA cable

the SATA cable carries the files stored on the disk to the mb so it can be played or transfered

what you are doing wont cause harm but your drive wont work
