My current system
Fx-6300
Sapphire Radeon R9 280
520 watt Sea Sonic psu
Gigabyte MATX motherboard
G skill sniper 8 gb DD3

My problem maxing Far cry 3 at 1600x900 i only get 25 to 30 fps is this normal or am i having problems with my GPU not getting enough power. I just got My R9 280 and I worry i may be risking my pc blowing up.

Probably a CPU bottleneck.
Im running a 280x with a 7 year old Intel quad, over clocked from 2.4 to 3.2Ghz. The OC definitely helped with new games like FC3.
At 19x10 i average a little under 60 with everything on max. 45 during action.

After looking up the fx 6300 specs a little more, it actually should be more than fast enough.
I would think that if the card was underpowered it would just crash.

Keep in mind I have a 280x, not a 280.

Building a custom PC is always a bit hit and miss. The only way to figure out if it is the PSU (or any other component) is to replace it and test again.

Your CPU and GPU are both stronger than mine, and I hold 35-45 fps in FC3 on ultra at 1080p with HBAO and 8xAF (only 2xMSAA+FXAA though).

Are you running HBAO? That effect is optimized for Nvidia cards (though not many people report a significant difference from AMD to Nvidia cards in that respect). With a 280 you might be better off with another version of AO in the options. Not sure if it'll help though.

Like theadler said, vsync may be the cause. I keep my vsync at 1 and my max buffered frames at 1. Double-buffered vsync (the 2 option) can cut your framerate in half in certain circumstances.

How much antialiasing are you using? More than 4x is pointless if you're worried at all about performance, especially since AA is a surprisingly big framerate hit in FC3.

But I agree with the assessment. 30 fps is good enough, at least in this game. It's just surprising you'd have to run it that low, so it might still be good to isolate the problem in case it causes more problems later.

If it's capped at 30 FPS solidly, that definitely sounds like v-sync.
If it's varying between 25-30 or whatever, thats something else like HBAO etc as mentioned.

I've assumed you've played with all the settings to see what works, but maybe give that a go.

So running SSAO or w/e and 2 AA im at 50 to 60 depending on the situation im looking at. but rarely dip below 45. And there is a marked increase in how the game feels. I could drop AA all togeather.

FC3 will always have FXAA on top of the MSAA unless you kill the post processing quality, but the MSAA still helps noticeably in small details. Especially around thin branches/cables and grass. I'd keep it at least 2x unless you really want to hit 60 fps.
