USB External HD not working when fully plugged, only when half way and only on USB 3.0 port

Hi, I have this weird problem.

My external HDD Seagate 1TB doesn't work when I plug it fully in the 3.0 port of my laptop.

But it works when I plug it only half way. Then, once working, if I push it inside fully, it will keep working sometimes, but others it won't.

The laptop has one 3.0 and one 2.0 USB ports. The HDD works fine in the 2.0 one, the problem only happens in the 3.0 one... but only with this HDD, because I have tried with four different pendrives and all of them work well when fully plugged.

So, the problem is specifically with the Seagate HDD and the 3.0 port. Not with other pendrives or the 2.0 port.

All the drivers are well installed as per Device Manager.

I am running W8.1 and it is full of problems with my laptop. Windows 7 runs perfect and stable, but Windows 8 and 8.1 give many problems. This is just the last one. (This is an ASUS X501A laptop).

Any idea?

Thanks

The disk is totally new and has worked fine for these few days I got it. I have many weird problems with W8.1 due to drivers with this laptop. Are you totally sure that it is a cable problem? Why does it work well in the 2.0 then?

Thanks

Oh, and I forgot to mention. When I plug it in, it does run indeed, the disk spins and I can feel it and hear it, but it doesn't show up in Windows and the white light won't turn on.

I feel that it is an 'insert molding' issue with the cable end. The mold temp might have been slightly off, the cooling profile could be off, the tolerances might be off specs. - either of these could create a problem. Besides, a lot of these products are made off-shore.

It's solved. I downloaded and installed all the drivers from the ASUS site for this laptop and now it works fine (so far). I don't even know which one made the trick, but I think it was the PCI or the ATKPackage.

A million thanks anyway for you help. If this happens to someone else, try first to check your drivers.
