Big difference between CMI8770 and 8788 audio chipsets?

I am trying to pick between two sound cards. The cheaper has the CMI8770 chipset and the more expensive has the CMI8788 chipset. Is it worth spending the extra money for the 8788? Is there a significantly noticeable difference when listening to music or outputting sound from a television between the two with 5.1 analog speakers?

Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for that. I'm inclined to believe these guys, as I've always suspected that the placebo effect has a lot to do with audio devices.

However, 1) my onboard sound doesn't support my 5.1 speakers (hence my need for a sound card), and 2) the CMI8770 chipset is older (circa 2004/2005 I think), so while audio devices now in 2014 might have plateaued to the point of being indistinguishable to the content consumer, I'm curious if there were still significant strides to make back when the CMI8770 first appeared.

I will probably go for the 8770 simply because that specific card offers me more options for networking sound, but who doesn't want the best possible product for their money?

Ok in that case you have a good reason...I would personally go with the 8788 because the 8770 is REALLY old, and is nearing discontinuation soon. If you really need network sound, go with it but personally I think the 8788 chipset is a better option :)
